    My ER6 arrived!!

These studies were done by the german computer magazine c't. And they were done twice with different people and different listening conditions. c't has a good reputation for professional, objective tests and indepth analysis of technical innovations. The test results are not available...

    Need a speaker suggestion...

Best bookshelf speakers i have heard yet. These are around $2500 a pair, but i don't think you can get them out of europe or even out of germany/middle europe. Some time ago (on headwize) i suggested the Genelec 1029+1090 sub+sat system. If my memory doesn't fool me kaiwei was the...

    Most nuetral, accurate headphones?

A Stax Lambda Pro together with the ED-1 IRT diffusfield equalisation box will be pretty darn neutral too.

    OT my new monitor

You should look at the response time of an LCD if you want to know wether it is blurry with fast movements or not. Some have response times of 50 msec (20 frames per second), some 25 msec (40 fps). That makes the difference, not the 60 Hz or 75 Hz setting of the graphic card.

Copy-protected CDs quietly slip into stores

It was a funny situation if they actually put copy protected CDs in the shops and don't note it on the case. You can buy the CD, copy it, because the copy-protection doesn't work, bring it back to the shop and claim that it doesn't work in your CD-player. Even better than Napster

What you can hear, versus what you can hear

I did some researches on CD-4. This is what i found: http://home.t-online.de/home/klaus.h...nn/english.htm At http://home.t-online.de/home/klaus.h...e-geht.htm#CD4 he describes the CD-4 format (in german). He writes that CD-4 uses the usual 20-15,000 Hz range for the front channels and...

etymotics: where does missing 4kHz go?

24 bit sampling depth can have some minor advantages: Multiple passes of digital processing do not introduce audible artifacts. You can use a digital, sample level volume control. The reproduceable dynamic range is bigger than 100 dB with very good systems and quiet listening rooms so 16 bit...

What you can hear, versus what you can hear

If you do listening test yourself: If you use a single driver to playback both < 22 kHz and >22 kHz there will be additional IM products in the range below 22 kHz which can be perceived as a change. IM products are faults produced by the driver and have nothing to do with perciving frequencies...

The importance of an on-line headphone community.

Corporate members are a great idea, i wonder why noone has thought about it before. Thanks Tyll! I am looking forward to a solution for the Headwize-forum + Headfi problem. To me making Headwize a headphone-news and projects-archive site and using Headfi as it's forum seems to be the best...

    good cheap turntable?

LPs certainly don't sound bad, there are some clicks every now and than but it isn't annoying. And there is a slight background noise, the signal to noise ratio of a LP is well below 75 dB. Nevertheless LPs can sound very well. But i do think LPs are much to inconvinient, no remote control...

Why only 2D if there could be 3D?

One reason why it hasn't been introduced is, that our hearing is far more accurate in the horizontal axis than in the vertical axis, around 2 degrees horizontal, around 15 vertical. Another reason is that stereo is not truely 1 dimensional but forms some kind of arc, the mono image of a...

Best headphones or earphones for everyday bus/train commuting?

The ER4 are missing, IMHO they are the best headphones for commuting. There was no pricelimit, so go ER4 go! Well for walking around i would recommend to remove one of the plugs, with custom molds it's no problem I don't walk around with music playing, i want to pay full attention to the...

Has the rationale for SACD vanished?

morphsci, every waveform can be represented as a sum of sine waves. That is what the fourier transformation is based on. Amplitude vs. time and amplitude vs. frequency are two possible views of identical things and both contain the same information. Why 96/24 in the production? That is...

    Headwize reopening!

I too do think that two forums are redundant, IMHO the post of head-fi should be somehow merged in the headwize database. What about a possible load-sharing between the headwize and head-fi servers, combined efforts, you know? It would be 'evil' to split this nice community.

Has the rationale for SACD vanished?

Well mathematically speaking every bandwidthlimited signal is perfectly represented when sampled at at least twice the highest signal frequency at an infinite resolution. The limited sampling resolution introduces a noise, the quantatisation(sp?) noise. Thats it. 44 kHz/24 Bit is a perfect...

    good cheap turntable?

Well actually there was a test 10 years ago in the german magazin Stereoplay. The test setup was: turntable->phone preamp->preamp output of the abovementioned phone pre->ADC->DAC->preamp In this test noone of the 100 test persons, most of them vinyl fans, could find any difference between...

Getting the SB Live digital out to work.

Using a SBLive and an external DAC is a bit counter-productive. The SBLive resamples everything played back over the digital out to 48 kHz and this is not lossless if the original signal is 44.2 kHz.

    Headphones vs. 2.1 Speakers

Some other studio monitor to compare the Sirocco Pros to: A 2.1 set of Genelec 1029 and 1091 is very nice. I recommended it some time ago on headwize. kawai, some of you might still know him, auditioned them and was astonished. To put this into context kawai has a ER4S and a HD580 in his...

    Please recommend headphones for me!

Great post! Something to add: For recording analytical headphones are surely better, but for mixing you should choose, out of the most neutral headphones, the ones which have the flaws you like worst, because your mixes will have the inverse flaws of your monitoring equipment.
