D2000 is quite different from the 701 and 880. It's a fun phone with relatively strong bass and has more coloration/smaller soundstage. I would personally choose the 880s if you have a warm-sounding amp/source (necessary to tame the slightly bright highs).

I second the Benchmark with balanced 650s. Not the clearest, but the synergy is quite addictive.

I've compared the HD800 (single-ended) with the Stax O2/007tA and 727A - I think a lot of it depends on which amp you choose for the HD800 because they're pretty picky. It does everything almost perfectly - tight/deep bass, warm midrange, revealing, and good soundstage, etc....but I didn't...

It's also possible that the Itunes version is causing this...you might want to download an older (or newer?) version to see if the noise still persists. If it does, then it's likely a driver conflict.

Do you have album art displayed while you play the music? I had a similar issue with foobar when too I used a certain customized setting because it was too graphics-intensive for my old pc. It made a weird static noise when I hovered the mouse.

I've heard clicks and pops from my Dac1 in the past and I realized it was my soundcard causing the problem. Wasn't really sure why.

I'm not sure if they are more directional than other speakers, but no matter which speaker you use, hitting the 'sweet spot' just makes it so much better. Speaker placement can be very time consuming and frustrating, but once you get it right, you'll be in heaven.

This is an interesting topic...I have a similar issue when I use my DAC1 - it used to make this cracking noise that was very irritating. Interesting enough, in only happens when I play music through foobar. It sounds weird, but I found out that uninstalling my video card's drivers fixed the problem.
