Hello,   As the title states, I'm looking for the best closed over-ear headphones on the market today, that can be driven by a portable hi-res DAP?   Please give suggestions.

Other than looks, whats the difference between ATH-MSR7 and ATH-M70x? Do they sound different? Is one easier to drive than the other? I'm at a loss with the differences here.

Based on Soundstage and clarity the hifiman variants of similar price point perform better.

The VE Zen 2.0 sell for $150 a piece if not more. Well above the OP's stated budget.   The VE Monk are in budget, but I haven't heard anything about them.   It would worry me, personally, that they are only for sale on aliexpress.com

You could also check the For Sale forums on here and see if you can find yourself an even better deal. I have found several source components for great prices on here. Often times, Massdrop items are sold on the forums after owners decide to sell them as well.

Given that those are 250 Ohms, if I remember correctly, you're going to need something with decent power output to effectively drive them.    In all honesty, the Schiit Magni/Modi stack is probably your best option for the $100 range you are looking at.

Im powering them with my Schiit Jotunheim+DAC. I like high volume, and with high gain, I don't have to turn the volume knob past 12 o clock. This is very powerful and should be capable of driving high impedance should I go there in the future.

I will kindly disagree. I've almost never found a closed-back headphone that I liked better for soundstage than planar magnetic/open-back headphones ofequal/similar price point/quality level.

As I stated, midrange is so recessed on the TH-900 that if you are looking for detail or clarity in the midrange, you wont be happy. Also, the soundstage is very closed in given that these sell for $1500. I would recommend planar magnetic or orthodynamics for soundstage....or open-back dynamics...
