    The New iRiver/Astell & Kern AK100: A High-End DAP

Back at Hi-End in Munich, you guys (A&K) promised that the AK100 will be able to be used as an USB DAC when the new firmware supporting gapless playback gets out. The firmware is here but no USB DAC support. Any news on this?

    The New iRiver/Astell & Kern AK100: A High-End DAP

Can confirm there are problems with 2.01 and 64G card. None of my two cards are mounted. It works fine with everything else, so I reverted back to the trusted Listrid 2.0   For those talking about scanning as a solution, what shall be scanned if the things don't even get mounted? Oh right...

    The New iRiver/Astell & Kern AK100: A High-End DAP

AK100 does not fully support playlist. You cannot navigate to a folder and open an existing playlist or a cue file. It is also not gapless, which blows for classical, jazz and live music. It also sometimes produces audible cracks/pops when changing from songs with different bitrate/resolution...

    The New iRiver/Astell & Kern AK100: A High-End DAP

Sorry for being bold but... they do demand a premium price, don't they? They clearly position themselves as a high end DAP maker. They should learn the new rules too. Not to forget, the Explorer costs less than 50% what an AK100 costs. Traditional high end company, with respect for the...

    The New iRiver/Astell & Kern AK100: A High-End DAP

Quote: Well, read around in the Meridian Explorer thread. They had a very similar problem, a much too high output impedance (around 50). Their reactions? Come clean about it, fix the problem (it is around 5 now) and replace the devices that exhibit the problem free of charge. AK can't...

    The New iRiver/Astell & Kern AK100: A High-End DAP

Quote: I bet.   The question is, shouldn't the public be informed regarding what this really means? Why not allow linking to an article that clearly explains it and why it is important? Why not allow posting measurements, for instance a UE triple.ti 10 which is a mess when paired...

    The New iRiver/Astell & Kern AK100: A High-End DAP

Well, Astell & Kern has censored another post enquiring about the much too high output impedance on their Facebook page... Way to go! I'd say they can learn a thing or two from Meridian.

AudioQuest Dragonfly Review : Affordable, Outstanding, Tiny DAC / Amp

So, too expensive? I challenge you to come with something as good at a similar price point. I got my second DragonFly (after the first one was defective) and I can't be happier.   And don't forget: DragonFly is async USB done right with two clocks for doing 44.1 and 48 properly. DacPort is...

The official "most OVERRATED headphones" thread

New phones out, add 'em here. For me, it's anything Bose, even worse than Apple. A bunch of brainwashing marketing strategists.

AudioQuest Dragonfly Review : Affordable, Outstanding, Tiny DAC / Amp

I tried connecting the DragonFly through a USB cable to the notebook, then I saw that if I apply pressure (not much, not very little either) on the USB jack from opposite the dragonfly light it works in 44.1 mode as long as the pressure is being applied. Then I saw it also works by applying...

AudioQuest Dragonfly Review : Affordable, Outstanding, Tiny DAC / Amp

There must be some sick problem I can't really understand... in the end I got it working on the charging USB port (the yellow one) on the notebook. The really sick thing about this is that DF is not alone on the USB controller anymore, as it was previously on the other port, the integrated...

AudioQuest Dragonfly Review : Affordable, Outstanding, Tiny DAC / Amp

Quote: Thanks, it works like a charm with thebuffer @ 50ms (WASAPI with 24/96).   The problem with 44.1 is getting worse, it's now a more or less permanent combination of static/white noise/scratches and not a single music note to hear (when playing 16/44.1 tracks via DirectSound or...

AudioQuest Dragonfly Review : Affordable, Outstanding, Tiny DAC / Amp

I got mine today, a very refreshing surprise as it comes to the audio quality and engineering marvel necessary to create such a tiny and good sounding device. Heck, it can even drive my DT-880 (600 version) better than the AMB mini3. Obviously not at loud levels, but still... I'm amazed.  ...

    Beyerdynamic DT880 *closed-back*

Today I got the new 770 pads. Really nice change in sound(stage, imaging) only from swapping out the original pads. I couldn't have ever imaged that the pads alone could change the sound that much, especially when they look a lot like the other ones.   Very pleased by this, they also fit my...

Quote:   Both things check out just fine, thank you very much! Are the diodes really needed? Do they have any influence on the sound?   First impressions: I hate the pads, my ears are overheating. Another thing, the phones aren't made for big heads such as mine... the bottom of my...

    Beyerdynamic DT880 *closed-back*

Just got my replacement Phones. The thing that strikes me is that they were packed in a different box altogether: the defective ones were packed in a box similar to this one: http://www.hifiheadphones.co.uk/images/catalog/beyerdynamic-dt880-premium-32ohm-Packaging.jpg   While the...

    Beyerdynamic DT880 *closed-back*

Got my 880 on Friday, unfortunately they are damaged: the driver on the right hand side is damaged, it distorts like when there's a bad contact, even at very low volume levels. So back they go for a (hopefully) working pair. Can hardly wait now that I got half a taste of them ;)

Quote:   Interesting. Where would you place the 701 compared to the 880 in various music genres? Also, don't know whether you do classical or acoustic jazz, but what you pick for these genres? I'm interested in your personal plain and simple opinion, nothing else.

Quote: Spot on! Those things are pretty good sometimes with a tiny bit of creativity. I used to  have a couple aquariums in the past and some night I was set for making a pair of silver ICs a la VH Audio, but not having any teflon hose as the recipe prescribes... you've guessed it...
