Where do you legally download your music from?
What ilikemonkeys said-go for downloading complete shows in SHN or FLAC format (lossless). I get most of mine from bit torrents listed at www.sharingthegroove.com . -
Got a Question that might not suit this forum, oh well...
I always create an image versus copying on the fly. Unless you have a SCSI based burning system, copying on the fly is going to introduce errors or create coasters. Properly extracted, the image should be bit perfect. -
Age Inappropriate Music / Mid Life Crisis??
As long as it's not Raffi or Sherri and Lampchop (showing my age there) there really isn't anything age-inappropriate. I've entered my second century and am generally bored to tears with most music genres that are "appropriate" for my age. -
DIY Equipment stand or not?
Jose Perez: very sharp looking rack. Question: did you do something to cover up/beautify the threaded rods? They don't look too "industrial" in your picture. rickcr42: I'm intrigued by your system. Can you post a picture or two? Wire management sounds very interesting. I haven't heard of... -
Another reason to hate the HD580/600 stock cable
Using a 650 cable sounds like a good idea, post how it comes out for you. I've shied away from using an aftermarket cable because I figured the problem was due to our heavy user (and less than gentle child, I'm guessing). Replacing an $18 cord every half year or so is an incidental consumable...- Thump

Another reason to hate the HD580/600 stock cable
At least it's not just me. I've had my HD 600's for a couple of years now. They probably get, without exaggeration, 6-10 hours of use every day between myself and my kids (the headphones are on the computer). I have to replace the cable every six months to a year, always because the right...- Thump

The BMG Thread
Offered for your consideration: D1448687 Jorma Kaukonen "Blue Country Heart"-Jorma is the former lead guitarist for Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. This is an excellent acoustic Americana-type music album. Guest appearances by Bela Fleck and Sam Bush. Highly reccommended. They also have... -
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.... How does it compare?
I'm two channel (headphones) almost exclusively and went from SB Live! Value to TB Santa Cruz to M-Audio Revolution. There is a huge jump in quality from the SB to the Santa Cruz. The M-Audio is slightly better than the Santa Cruz. You can find the Santa Cruz for about $40 all the time, and...- Thump

You say you want a tube-powered car stereo??
How long would tubes stand up to the vibrations in a car? Sounds pretty expensive and high maintainence to me.- Thump

copying HDCDs
Sleepyking: Just specify the source reader and output burner as the same drive in your burning software. The software will read the source disc then prompt you to switch it with your blank media. I have a 2 CD system and still do it this way. I don't trust IDE and burning on the fly to...- Thump

to FLAC or not to FLAC?
Quote: Originally posted by Wodgy Yes, you should FLAC. CD-Rs only have about a five year lifespan before they start becoming unreadable, so FLAC is a better choice, I have plenty of CDRs that are older than five years that are fine. This is an urban legend, at best. FLAC (or...- Thump

Best Live Album?
Live concerts are my weakness-I probably have a couple hundred concerts from many different artists. Of the commercially released live albums, I would have to agree that the Allman Brothers Fillmore East is the lodestone of live albums. Its great musically, and sounds even better the louder... -
Flac APE or WAV whats the best?
Lindrone gave a very good summary. There is one other major lossless format to consider-SHN (shorten). Its multiplatform & open source like FLAC. For ease of use and error checking I prefer SHN over FLAC, but they are very, very similar-its the Ford vs. Chevy argument. I trade a lot of...- Thump

Why does live music have to suck so bad?
I would totally disagree. The PA systems for live music have improved exponentially in the last twenty years. These days it is not unusual to go hear a bar band with a sound system that is better than all but the most discerning audiophiles'. I would say it is the exception, not the rule, that... -
Which is first? The audiophile or the music lover?
Definately music lover. I doubt I would ever be considered an audiophile. I'm into equipment only to the extent it makes my music sound appreciably better. No cable lifters and $500 interconnects for me, thank you. -
HD600/Cardas with RKV or MPX3
The RKV is the only quality amp I've had any serious experience with so I can't make a meaningful comparison. But my volume control knob is silky smooth, one of the best I've every used on any equipment. Maybe something is wrong with yours? On the looks issue, upon seeing my RKV my wife's...- Thump

Converting Monkey's Audio
Don't forget SHN-it's certainly the most common format I run across when downloading bit torrent files, with FLAC a respectable second. APE isn't used much in that field-its proprietary and, unless I'm mistaken, is limited to the Windows platform (no Apple or Linux). -
Has anyone ever paid this much for a few LPs?
I'm junking my IRAs and going to box up the LPs in the basement with loving care in a time capsule. -
Booya! The check is in the mail.

Jethro Tull CD sound quality
Aqualung was remastered and reissued in an anniversary (20th? 25th?) a year or two back and it sounds fine to me, as a casual Tull fan. I've heard that the early Yes albums are remastered and issued on Rhino now, which has me pretty excited. -
Silver RKV MkII (first pic)
Another fan of the black and gold, although I agree it looks better in person than in pictures and I haven't seen the silver version in person (I own the black and gold).- Thump

markl's 10 Commandments of Compilation CDs
Some of my favorite boxsets violate your rules against b-sides, live versions, outtakes, etc. For example the CSN or Jefferson Airplane (2400 Fulton) boxes. The rarities, etc. make these boxsets special, versus having pristine copies of the original studio tracks. The Byrd's box and the... -
Who wants a cassette deck in their PC?
Or you could do like me senior citizen father-get $10 worth of patch cords and splitters from Radio Shack and hook an externa cassette deck to your soundcard. Simple and effective way to transfer tapes to CDRs or vice versa.- Thump

Best way to burn CD's
I disagree with Demolition about using "burn on the fly" (ie, read from one CD-reader while writing to another CDRW). Unless you have a SCSI setup (very unusual and expensive) my experience has been burning on the fly will inevitably put errors on the copy-usually clicks and pops. If you...- Thump

Favorite Elvis Costello album?
I'm also not a big Elvis Costello fan, but the one I keep turning back to is King of America. Its opener, Brillant Mistake, is one of my favorite Costello tracks.
