Ive got an older Portaphile V2 (not ^2) with class A biasing and DC (i run it off an elpac) ... and i think it sounds damn good. At the price, i think its terrific value for money. The other thing that shocked me was how small it is. It is fricken tiny...which is something that doesnt usually...

Hi i have the same amp, ive used it to drive my ms-1s and akg k501s and i believe ive heard the same as you in what the amp has done to the sound. it certainly has enough power to drive the cans, and the sound is tightened up all over and there is more clarity, but the highs are almost made...

alot of people say the portaphile v2 goes very well with AKG K501's, which are very good for jazz.

i honestly dont understand the whole pads thing. Im sure it does change bass but there is something called an equilizer... i think? i have black rings? im not sure. Whatever the case, on my emu 0404, i just tweak the equilizer...and man there is as much bass as my ms-1s, and it aint bloated...

you know i was actually starting to think i might take my alessandro ms-1's along... the only thing is if i stacked it (which is almost a certainty) im sure not only would they get damaged and wrecked, my head would take a battering cos they stick out a fair bit...

i too am asian and have er4p's and i also thought i had small ears and narrow/short ear canals. I found initially it was very difficult to get a good seal, even when i put them in deep (till it semi hurt). The tips irritated my ears and the sound wasnt very good because of lack of good seal...
