Don't know if you ever got an answer but there is no distortion on the original model

  I honestly don't know if it's due to converting to balanced, switching pads or some combo, but there's definitely a lot more thump. A LOT. 

I got around to reterminating my cable to balanced and grabbed cow hide pads and I can honestly say it's quite a drastic difference! Still tempted on the TH-X00 just because, but I'm so close to dropping out (and probably will before the drop ends) because of how the Omni's have become even better!

The pair I bought came with the buffalo leather strap and while I thought I would prefer the pilot pad (since ordered and received) I can say that the leather strap does increase comfort. I found I got a bit of a hot spot with just the pilot pad pretty quickly. Back on the strap went, now with...

Yep, using balanced out. I found changing from "BAL" to "ACG" actually helps a noticeable amount although it's still not perfect.

Definitely plan on it! I managed to get a better seal with the pads which also helped.

At the expense of sounding like a noob can someone ELI5 why when playing 44.1KHz files, they are output as PCM 48KHz and not PCM 44.1KHz?

I actually went LCD-X to new 400i​, but I was searching for my happy medium for $ value. Obviously LCD-X is better in virtually every regard but considering the recent cost difference, it's certainly diminishing returns.

Wow, good job getting to the bottom of this! Coming from K7xx they do feel like a big difference in soundstage, so much so I debated my "upgrade". I think I just need to get used to something on a more normal level and not so exaggerated. I also thought bass quantity would be similar but better...

        Just received my m9xx, can't comment on X00's but so far so good with K7xx!
