KOSS ESP-950 Thread
Go with a modded Stax amp and a Koss to Stax adapter from Mjolnir Audio. The ESP95X really come alive with more power and the Sr006t modded amp I have also works great with my SR007.- dagothur

CanJam Chicago 2023 Impressions Thread (June 24-25, 2023)
Crosszone CZ-1. Never heard of them before the show and I should have listened to them through an amp. I would like some more time with them and my own stack but I don't know if I want to spend $2500 for an experiment. Audeze Carbn. Stax SR-X9000. Spirit Torino Pulsar. ZMF Caldera. Grand...- dagothur

CanJam Chicago 2023 Impressions Thread (June 24-25, 2023)
First public candid of me since 2019, to boot. With the caveat that I was feeling hyper critical and you can never get enough time with headphones at CanJam: The HE-1 was great but not mind-blowing in the way I expected. I was in the first group to demo and everything was just perfect. Not in...- dagothur

The Stax amp gives it a fuller, more balanced sound. It felt like upgrading from a Q701 to a pre Fazor LCD-2. You'd do well to upgrade to a good Stax/Mjolnir amp so you can upgrade to other Estats in the future as well.- dagothur

The amp didn't ship with the issue a year ago so I assume the caps and resistors were fine at the time. The issue likely isn't so common that those parts should always be replaced when modifying the amps listed. He didn't explain why it was only in the left channel, but by the time I sent it out...- dagothur

Mjolnir Audio SRM-006tA with a CCS mod. A few months ago I was getting static-like noise in the left channel that increased with volume and evolved into a noticeable imbalance. From spritzer: "The HV- line wasn’t working and it was a failed resistor that connects the two caps there. I’ve seen...- dagothur

I had to send my amp out to Iceland to be repaired, but after a month and a lot of money in shipping it's back in good working order. The SR-007 are really something special and how I imagine Audeze would turn an estat in the early 2010s. I've read they scale well with more power, but for the...- dagothur

Birgir has modded/refurbished Stax amps for considerably less. I bought an 006tA from him last year for $1400.- dagothur

Introducing the CORINA Electrostatic Reference Headphone
The topology has been discussed elsewhere and it's thought to be very similar or identical to the Koss Energizer. 2000ppv is astronomical and I would be wary of taking that figure at face value.- dagothur

Pretty sure my electrostatic amp is the issue now. Static noise which varies with the volume knob in the left channel, left is much quieter than the right. Only happens when the AGD is connected to the estat amp, and it's worse in balanced mode. I took a meter to my AGD amp and it measured...- dagothur

spritzer is always selling refurbished/upgraded Stax amps. I use an SRM-006t and it pairs exceptionally well with the SR-007.- dagothur

By his own admission he's very brash and has high standards. but his criticism of the cans themselves isn't scathing. When we're spending close to 5 figures on audio gear it should make us angry when sellers are uninformed or put out a subpar product. E.g., the Edition 10.- dagothur

Left channel noise/imbalance issue
When my Mjolnir SRM-006t is connected to my AGD D27 via balanced XLR, the left channel is much quieter than the right, and there's a beeping/static noise in that ear which responds to volume control. This happens to both my 950X and SR-007. The D27 is connected to my PC via USB, and does not...- dagothur

Introducing the CORINA Electrostatic Reference Headphone
Electrostatics are lightning fast and have much more natural imaging and presentation than regular dynamics. They require dedicated amplification not compatible with regular headphones and are much more sensitive to dust and moisture. Bass quantity is often times less than dynamics. The barrier...- dagothur

Update: The left channel in my SR-007 is much quieter than the right and the static noise gets louder based on the volume knob. Would blowing air across it fix it at this point? It's only been a few days and this issue has already killed my excitement for them. Edit: It was the left balanced...- dagothur

I don't have another Stax compatible amp to try or know anybody local with an estat, but testing the 95X with the stock energizer could eliminate the Mjolnir amp. There's a hi fi shop a few hours away that sells the CRBN so they should have an estat amp to test. I could try my work laptop and...- dagothur

I haven't heard the Carbn, but based on reviews it doesn't have the Audeze house sound I'm familiar with. I tried swapping sockets and nothing changed, but I can certainly try varying volume and discharging. I tried swapping the inputs on the amp and the sound didn't follow. Nobody's perfect, but I bought the amp from Birgir last March and feel as though he'd catch it before sending it out. Just got my SR 007 on the 20th and I'm hearing noise like a telegraph in the left channel when nothing is playing. No, my pair are brand new and un-modded. I won't buy e-stats used unless it's from somebody I know has taken immaculate care of them, and I don't see a need to change/improve on their bass response. You're right that Koss missed out by not updating the 950 or venturing into hi-fi but you missed my point about the 95X bargain entirely. It scales very well for much less than other headphones at the same price point through the same equipment. I chose the Mjolnir amp because birgir sells very...- dagothur

Review by 'dagothur' on item 'Massdrop x Koss ESP/95X Electrostatic System'
Introduction The Koss ESP/95X is a (now discontinued) collaboration between Drop and Koss to produce a cheaper, nonportable version of the latter's electrostatic ESP-950. I got my Mjolnir SR-006t in on Monday, using it with an ESP/95X. I haven't listened to a tube amp in a long time before this but I'm very pleased with the purchase. The sound is much fuller and more authoritative but maintains a lot of the ethereal nature unique to electrostats. I would liken it...- dagothur
