When I got the 400S's I was able to compare them with a pair of Audezes in the same store. It may have been a blessing in disguise that the Audezes had to go back, at least to my ears anyway.

I've been back & forth between buying either the APPJ or the Schiit Vali 2. The advantage of the Vali is that it has both headphone & line outs. Is maxing the volume on the APPJ & running a line to a preamp equivalent to a line out level? Thanks

 I'll second that. That's the only complaint I've had about the 400s - they don't wrap around my big ol' haid far enough. The bottom of the pads don't descend enough & I have to tuck the earlobes up into them. Other than that though I love these phones.

I just wanted to double-check on the compatibility here - the HiFiMan cables have the stereo 2.5 plugs where the HD-700 has mono 2.5's. Will this still work correctly? I'd really like to get a longer cable. Thanks.

The X3II / 400S combo sounds very good. I usually use the Hi setting just because the 400s' aren't quite as efficient as they're touted to be, although the Lo setting works too. I prefer the sound of the 400s' going through the iFi Micro DSD however (this is with no EQ through the X3).

I can't offer a full length comparison but I did try both models this past week. I didn't spend a whole lot of time with the EL-8's because there was something that just sounded off when compared to the 400S'. Of course that's just my subjective impression - someone else could hear both of them...

Hey, glad to see this thread kick back in!! The last post on it had been Thursday afternoon & since it's been such  busy thread I was afraid something might have happened to it on the servers. I may get a chance to audition them tomorrow & have been following the thread pretty closely.
