    Target Audience for iPod mini

Target Audience(s) for iPod mini are -avid readers of Plum Sykes (henceforth, those who watched and ??still watches?? the now defunct Sex in the City). -soccer moms (formerly known as housewives) who bought in to the trap of Oprah's Favorite Thing -men who likes small things and women who...

SQ ATRAC3 LP2 vs AAC 128Kbs, my personal experience

dude, thanks for the heads-up. I was thinking of getting one of those iPod, but then I realise I enjoy the sound of my MD player regardless of how clunky SonicStage may be, or how uncool the player itself may seem compared to the ultra-chic iPod. I like iTunes, and if I have as much money as...

Sony HI-MD Model in stock at Best Buy

I turned to MD about two years ago- did consider an mp3 player (non-HD based) but grabbed a Sony N505 when NetMD was introduced. Last year I got the NF810 to replaced my dead 505. Was going to get a 15gb iPod for the same price but for whatever reason went with MD instead. I like the "cultish"...

    Sony MDR-E888LP gold/silver opinions?

I find that the 888s are really euphonic- I still have to fiddle around on my MD equalizer to get it to sound the way I want it to but overall I find there's a nice bloom in the midrange, the highs a little closed in and the bass can be fat with the right source.

    Mahler!

The one I got and the one most people swear by is Bernstein's recording with NYPO on DG (Deutsche Grammaphon).

    Ordered SR60s..

I just bought mine about a week ago. I think it sounds really good- I had the HD580 for a while (sold it because it was too cumbersome and big and wouldn't play loud on my MD portable). I like the fact that my MD player (MZ-NF810) can drive it to more than decent level. I'm also using it for...

Name your top 5 musical CRUSHES....

I find Jeff Buckley to be a great singer (and he's hot as well, not Britney Spears kinda trashy hot but hotter!!!!). I was devastated when he died. Among female singers- I'd pick Tori Amos or Fiona Apple- again not Britney Spears hot but someone who you can get high with and stay up all night...

    Your favorite non-cliche classical music

Benjamin Britten's Cello Suites are riveting (especially with Rostropovich). His more lighthearted works that I enjoy are Simple Symphony (the 2nd movement, Playful Pizzicato never fail to bring a smile to my face) and The Young Person's Guide to Orchestra. His more sombre works- Peter Grimes...

what kind of speakers are good for nearfield listening?

ATC makes great nearfield monitor although the price is prohibitive; check out this. Also Wilson Audio Tiny Tots (aka WATTS)- again if you have the dough. LS3/5A or its successor LS5/12A (the former more euphonic, the latter more precise) are great nearfield monitors. If you're into DIY- I say...

    Emotion in Music Without Words

Anything by Arvo Part- especially Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten. Also Stravinsky's Duo Concertant (for violin and Piano)- the first movement: Dithryrambe. Another one is Samuel Barber's Adagio for String. And Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht.

    MB Quart QP-130 earbuds

I'm using an MB Quart tweeter in my DIY speakers- infact these tweeters were highly regarded circa 1990s (Hales, ProAc were using were using a version of these tweeter). Their auto stuff were over-rated and over-priced, as were their home speakers. But their raw drivers are pretty amazing.

cd source - what do you use?

An old (cir. 1992) Yamaha CDX 2020. Bought it cause I love the look: titanium, rosewood side panels and it weighs 35 Ibs. It does make music though I doubt it's anywhere as good as audiophile CD players nowadays. If anything I might add an outboard DAC (Musical Fidelity comes to mind).

your favorite cans for a portable

I just got my mdr-e888 over the weekend- I've yet to hear the MX-400/500 but nonetheless, these headphones are so smooth. The top end is a little reticent but the midrange is absolutely lush. It may lack detail in absolute term and in all probability some music may not sound good on it but for...

    Sony MD-N505 Minidisc Player/Recorder

I have no idea where you get your info from- MZ-N505 does come with an adaptor- there's even an option to charge rechargeable battery. And there is a provision for remote- you can even use the remote that comes with the top of the line MZ-N1. I even use a remote from my old PCDP. Quote...

    NetMD anyone?

I think if you are going to buy an MD player, there's nothing wrong with going with NetMD equipped player. The reason why I was hesitant with MD is because of real-time recording. I admit I'm not an organized person- when I'm up every morning before heading out to work I'd record a CD or two...
