Effect of Materials (Wood/Metal/Plastic) on Sound
I've been wondering a lot about this recently - in the Grado world, it seems that metal-wood hybrid > wood > metal > plastic, at least in regards to price and perceived luxury. Does this have any real correspondence with SQ? String instruments are made with wood and brass instruments...- az2123

Same Old Schiit? Balanced Research and Valhalla Amp Giveaway
Do you have balanced headphones? If so, which ones? Not yet. If not, are you looking at balanced headphones or a balanced amp in the future? Yup. For a balanced amp, how important is it to also have single-ended outputs? Not important - I have other amps for that.- az2123

If I mostly listen to mp3's, does it make sense to spend more than $100 on headphones?
I used to have all FLAC, but I converted everything to 320kbps MP3 once I realized I couldn't tell a difference even on my DT880s- az2123

Modern/Alternative Rock And The Grado Sound
I listen to punk/prog/electro-rock as well as some more mainstream/alternative rock, and all I can say is that that's the main reason I keep my Grados around. While my other headphones may be "higher-fi", something about Grados+rock synergy keep pulling me back to them... Quote:- az2123

for metal : jvc dx700 or sr225i
Haven't heard DX700, but... You can buy SR225(i) used for a good deal less than $256, possibly even $150 if you look hard enough and don't care whether it's the i or non-i version (there's minor SQ difference). And yes, there are people who do ship international.- az2123

James, congrats on your SIX years of Head-Fi membership! Just out of curiosity, what do you mean by "BA" in your sig? I've actually never owned any high-end IEMs, so this would be very exciting for me. If I were to win, I'd probably pick the CK100. The forward sound is right up my...- az2123

Just heard the Alessandro MS-1....
Hm... still gonna have to disagree with you on this one... I use my MS2i unamped and they're fine. For me, the highs of the MS2i are actually perfect. I originally came from a SR225i, which had ridiculous highs. The MS2i offered a fuller, refined sound over the SR225i (although sometimes I...- az2123
