SoCal TOTL Electrostatic Festival at The Source AV, Sat Feb 25 11-6

I've been really busy since the event, but I'll post some impressions once my week calms down a bit.

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

If you are in pro audio, you are surrounded by meters.  They're not all too useful for Hi-Fi (though they are cool), but they are definitely essential in the pro audio world.

☯️ Cavalli Audio presents The Source AV’s Summer Series 2016

I probably should've asked this when I was on the phone with Wayne, but I forgot.  How is source material going to work?  Should we bring a flash drive with what we want to listen to?  Will there be any analog sources (vinyl or reel to reel tape) setup?

    Audeze LCD-X

Yeah, the bass of the LCD-X is pretty tough to match.  It's not overpowering by any means (as in basshead headphones).  It's just able to teach very low with very tight control, resulting in very articulate and heavy-hitting, yet accurate bass.

    Audioengine A5+ Review

Eh, he probably didn't have them setup properly.  In the pictures, the speakers aren't on stands, and they are very close to his walls/windows, which is going to have a large effect since these are rear-ported.

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

I'm mainly using a Woo Audio WA7 (1st generation) for my HD 700s, and I think it's a good pairing.  It's a little on the warm side, but not too much.  I've got the upgrade Electro-Harmonix gold pin tubes for the amp, but haven't upgraded to the tube power supply yet.   As a side note, I'm not...

New Grace Design m920 DAC/amp with DSD decoding

The Grace remote is a beast.  It's quite heavy for it's size and the buttons have a very nice feel to them.

    CanJam SoCal 2017 (April 8-9, 2017)

Yep.  If you get a chance to go, be careful, there's a brutal dip in the parking lot by their building that's a lot worse than it looks.  I bottomed out a rental car quite badly on it lol.

    CanJam SoCal 2017 (April 8-9, 2017)

It's still months away.  I'm sure they'll be there.  They are based in Costa Mesa.

New Grace Design m920 DAC/amp with DSD decoding

Yeah, I don't know why people were suggesting that you could use those connections for headphones.  They are line-out connections, just like the RCA outputs (except those are single-ended of course).  Why would they have headphone outputs in the back?

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

The widest soundstage that I've heard in headphones that I can remember is a pair of HD 800's powered by the work-in-progress Cavalli Liquid Tungsten.  That really was a magic pairing...

    CanJam SoCal 2017 (April 8-9, 2017)

Well, I can't argue with that :).  I live in Orange County as well.   Yeah, I heard about the closure.  Maybe they'll replace it with another venue.  We do have the Observatory in Santa Ana though, which is a fantastic venue.  LA is chalked full of cool old theaters though, not to mention...

    CanJam SoCal 2017 (April 8-9, 2017)

I'll be there!   Quote:   Pros and cons.  Orange County is easier when it comes to parking, but there's a lot more to do (and eat!) in LA.  As a bonus, since I would hope most people here are music fans, LA has one of the best music scenes in the world, Orange County on the other...

    Audioengine A5+ Review

I have not personally heard that DAC, but reviews on it seem to be very good for the money, and it has all of the connections you need.  I'm sure that the D1 would beat it, but yes, the E10K Olympus should do everything that you need.

New Grace Design m920 DAC/amp with DSD decoding

I haven't tried it, but I would imagine it does since it uses its own power supply.  I don't have a cable to plug it in or I would check it for you.  I would email Grace and ask them, as they are usually very quick to respond to emails.

Yes, if the Schiit equipment is not an option due to price or availability.

    Audioengine A5+ Review

Schiit actually ships to Canada from what I know, and they have a dealer in Vancouver as well.   They only sell the Modi 2 Multibit though, which is the best version of the Modi 2, but probably more than you want to spend.   http://www.headphonebar.com/schiit-modi-multibit/   I did not...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Hotel California is one of the stand-out tracks that I hear too much at audiophile shows.  To be honest, I think it's an overrated song in-general that doesn't justify its length very well.  Part of it is probably the fact that I just don't listen to classic rock much anymore.  Unlike most of my...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Keep in mind that there are full range loudspeakers out there that can go quite low, sometimes even lower than a small subwoofer.  I listened to plenty of two channel setups that could dip quite low.  That's not to say that a subwoofer couldn't help them even more, but it was certainly not...

    Audeze LCD-X

I don't have the tube power supply yet, so I can't speak to which tubes are best for it, but the Electro-Harmonix Gold Pin tubes in the amp definitely make a difference.  Keep in mind that the amp and the power supply do not use the same tubes, as your wording implied.  I've heard that they...

    T.H.E Show Newport 2016 June 3-5

Anyone who is not as familiar with the (rather massive) world of loudspeakers should check out at least a few of the heavy-hitters.  I'm a huge fan of Wilson speakers, and there are several rooms running various models of them on the second floor.  YG Acoustic is another fantastic brand of...

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

They are great headphones, especially now since the price on them has dropped a lot from the original $1000 they were released at.   The biggest complaint that people have is the treble, and while it doesn't bother me, when you compare it to a more accurate headphone, you can tell that it's a...

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

I think that HD 800's can sound considerably better, mainly due to their soundstage (not that the HD 700's are lacking in this department) but they take a summit-fi amp to do that.  I was lucky enough to spend some time with the Liquid Tungsten prototype at CanJam recently, and that amp with the...

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

"Man Next Door" is an even better track off of Mezzanine for checking sub-bass (though Angel is a great pick as well).   HD 700's can definitely do sub-bass.  Are there headphones that can do it better?  Yes, of course (LCD-X for example), but I've never felt like the low end was lacking too...
