Help me to choose a used DAP.

Everything I have bought has been secondhand. The CD ripper cost me £150 I think. It is sooooo much easier than using software on a PC, naming tracks etc. I think I had a copy of Foobar that maybe found the information and did it for you too.. but I think you have to pay for that anyway? I...

    Denon D5000 VS. D7000

P.S. If anyone wants to read the Lawton tear-down of the D7000, it can be found on the Internet Archive, alas with no photos on the page I'm looking at (some saves of it may have photos..) : https://web.archive.org/web/20090416085436/http://www.lawtonaudio.com/page20.html

I don't know about locally! I think any replacement be shipped from china originally. I found some on AliEXpress but haven't yet purchased one (it would appear I didn't complete the purchase! I thought I had ... so I will have to now wait longer ). I think it was going to cost just £13 plus...

Multiple driver iems have all sorts of hurdles to over-come to smoothly integrate those drivers together so they sound as one whole; cross-overs, phase differences... With single driver iems, and dynamic drivers in particular, I guess it's about finding a good driver as much as anything and...

Has anyone replaced their AK240 battery recently? I'm looking for a replacement but not sure where is a good source (there don't seem to be ones on ebay any more, if they were reliable).

To change cable to a commercially available balanced one, I guess to change cable for a custom one (I don't think that's needed, but some do). I think it's just that plug that makes them look uncomfortable. Would be better to have a much smaller connector that acted more like the old cable.

I didn't find the sound between the Gold and 2HD to be that different when I had them. So I returned the 2HD because I could, and get the money back. The 2HD is now the flag-ship yes, but probably because the Gold was too damned expensive and probably not selling because of it.. it was for...

PONO - Neil Youngs portable hi-res music player

It would be interesting to compare the original CD to the remastered CD layer (which you have no-doubt done). Hopefully the CD layer will be from the hi-res mastering so will just be down-sampled with a good algorythm.

I definately feel the same. Im not sure where it tops out for me (probably 96kHz) but for sure, once you hear something dual recorded in 44.1/16 and 192/24, suddenly you hear a hardness in the CD quality version when going back. When I hear something recorded at 352k and then listen to a...

So if you fear something (fear something is going to break) you just continue to be too afraid to test via experience? Teaching knowledge is the best teacher! Once you use knowledge and intelligence, you no longer have to fear things... you can know.

    The Astell & Kern AK240

The AK240 needs 5v via a USB connection and the smallest current USB provides is about 0.5A. 0.5A x 5V = 2.5 watts It will charge fine with 2.5 watts of power. All USB sockets provide that, all chargers provide that. Doesn't matter which country or whether 110v or 230v.... I hope that has...

When I right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar -> open Sound Settings - > Device Properties (make sure Oppo is the device selected in the box above) -> "Advanced" tab.... Yes, it negates the DAC - its just an analogue audio input to the amplifier.

Regarding immersion when listening - I've had that desire before too, but the simple fact is that not much music is recorded that way! Sure, you can do things to make everything sound immersive but I'm not sure you can do that without DSP, by just using headphone design. Turn up the volume...

This adapter is for specific headphones that use a 3.5mm balanced, 4-pole connector on the end. The listing talks about some Hifiman headphones. This is NOT for using headphones with microphone.... you can't use it with some cheap heaphones, unless there are some cheap headphones on the market...

Sounds like it will work to change the 2.5mm balanced socket to a 3.5mm balanced socket. That would be fine for AK240.

    FlaresPro/FlaresGold by Flare Audio

(Here I am quoting sodesuka) I tend to agree with this whilst disagreeing with the idea that the Gold has a prominent peak that stands out in the treble. It's a matter of interpretation of other people's descripion of sounds which will likely be of a different meaning to our own use of the same...

    FlaresPro/FlaresGold by Flare Audio

I'd agree with that mostly, although I've not examined the mid bass/prominent highs so much. I've a theory the extra 3D feel comes from the upper treble, and more upper treble gives you faster leading edges (meaning more harmonics to a wave form) which often plays into how the brain reacts to...

I sympathise with that but for me it's not a problem and tend to hold DAPs in my hand anyway. My phone too when listening to music. I want to be able to stop or mute it straight away because taking out iems is too much of a problem when you need to hear what's going on around you.

    The Astell & Kern AK240

Pono is great - I have one. But it was panned by so many when it came out. Many people hate the design and wont even listen to it either. And so there's not much demand for them secondhand. And anyway, they didn't cost much when new! Meanwhile, because the AK range is mostly crazily...

The Altmann Tera Player - Thread

No..... I suspect "greed" - OK, I'm not so happy to classify it as "greed", I'd say arrogance. He makes something very cheap to make and thinks so highly of his own creation (it may well sound very good.. that's not the point) that he then sees what people are spending on other DAPs and then...
