Asus Essence One Headphone Amp/DAC (CeBIT 2011)

Try out LM6172 for I/V with MUSES01 in LPF and buffer. Solder 0.1uf stacked film caps between pins 4&8 (+&-) of the I/V opamps - try ebay for Siemens stacked film caps, you don't need large capacitance, just something to decouple at HF.     Class a bias could be worth exploring for heavy...

    Problem with Xonar Essence One

Thanks Chewy :)      You should not be getting any noise at all, aside from what Chewy suggested the only other thing I can think of is it may need a firmware update (you will need to connect it to a PC and download firmware from the ASUS product page).

    cryogenically treating tubes

Quote:     Cryogenic treatment of brake discs is something that is supposed to reduce warping.   http://www.metalscience.com/techinfo_ASM.php   How that relates to audio tubes is anyone's guess I suppose - depends on metals and the process itself. No telling if the effects (if...

Xonar Essense stx Random LOUD high pitched Ringing Noise?

I am looping this to HQ. Can you please try the following:     Disable "SPDIF Passthrough Device" in the control panel Disable GX     Let me know if that helps. If it does not, then will likely need full config details including all relevant driver and software info.   -Raja

    New Audeze LCD3

Quote:   I suppose I would echo that some of the audience does not care about accuracy per se, though they are probably chuffed that their latest purchase has some facet of pseudo-science behind it. If they knew that most of what they are paying for circuit wise isn't really special or...

    Non-audiophile reactions to high-end headphones

This post be SE pretty much sums up reactions of level-headed by-standers when it comes to audiophilia:   http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/everything-else/37842-one-way-make-expensive-speaker-cables-2.html#post437017

    Can you trust Audeze?

There are two types of support a vendor can provide its customers. The first is reactive support where customer issues are addressed as they arise. Solely relying on reactive support methods does not pay long-term dividends in sharply contested markets. Online media and search engine...

    New Audeze LCD3

Quote: I suppose it is swings and roundabouts. The high-end Sennheisers have very well matched drivers, which probably requires adequate levels of staffing, investment in equipment and time, as well as soaking up on yield drop-outs.

Source for Sennheiser HD800 Headphone Connectors

I contacted ODU about buying some of these connectors who put me in contact with Sennheiser. Sennheiser replied after a while and asked me to contact my local Sennhesier office who WILL sell the connectors to me. I haven't enquired on a price yet, but I'd imagine it's a lot less than the $50 or...

    Audeze LCD-2 Orthos

Quote: Red blanket looks great! I think I'm going to ask Audeze to ship mine with a yellow one, though. :)   On a sidenote, yes, that shipping case should handle the bump and grind of frisky courier firms.

    Sennheiser HD800 Appreciation Thread

Quote:     I suppose it's because with headphones it's extreme nearfield listening, so large enough changes in capacitance and inductance are easier to pick out (if there are changes to the sound).    I've found you can make out subtle changes in transparency between wire...

    HD-800 amp discussion

I've managed to smooth out the impact of the sharp 6~7k response by removing some of the extraneous hf decoupling in the PSU of my DAC/headamp and also changed out the biasing scheme from battery BIAS to choke/tantalum. The result is probably a little higher second harmonic, but the detail is...

    Audeze LCD-2 Orthos

Quote: I think I'm going to ask to have mine shipped in the travel case. Simply because I live in the UK and have seen that Audeze don't secure the headphones in the wooden case. I wouldn't want mine to arrive damaged.   If you are going to use your phones out on location or travel...

    DIY Sennheiser HD800 balanced cable

Quote:   The question is a little ambiguous. Do you want to make a balanced cable or return a balanced cable to single ended?    If returning a balanced cable to single ended, you'll need to connect both of the "inverted" signal -ve wires to the TRS ground and run the +ve for each...

    DIY Sennheiser HD800 balanced cable

I've got cables here that consistently measure in the 0.02 ~ 0.04 ohm region at this length on the same DMM repeatedly (single core silver plated microwave coax). The HD580 cable comes out around 0.9 ohms.   Accurate in terms of real world resistance or not the HD 800 cable is consistently...

Headphone Redux - interesting article on the state of the high-end headphone market

If you're enjoying the sound why be concerned if it's through headphones or loudspeakers? Not sure what the issue is really. It's a one page article with divisive undertones. Only someone foolish would draw a line under a person's chosen method of audio playback. I fail to see how headphones are...

    Sennheiser HD800 Appreciation Thread

Quote: Thanks Amarphael,   I think that midrange allure is coming from the sonic signature of the 3A5 DHTs. More of the nuance and texture gets through in comparison to the HD 580s. The OPTs are custom wound by master winder Pieter Treurniet. The input impedance of the HD 580s is...

    Sennheiser HD800 Appreciation Thread

Got my HD 800s yesterday. I had to re-terminate them for balanced operation off the bat as my DAC output stage is differential out (Wolfson DACs diff out, feeding 3A5 tubes, into custom 9:1 ratio transformer outputs  - differential all the way with no SE conversion). I use Foobar's built-in...

Which DIY DAC? (Opus? Buffalo? Any other contenders?)

One advantage the 32 bit buffalo does hold over the Wolfson is that you can add a digital attenuator in the form of the Volumite. You shoud get increased levels of resolution going this route over a potentiometer in your amp...
