    JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege

Interesting. I didn't even consider smaller manufacturers. Have you tried the SR2s yourself? Or are you going by reviews and frequency graphs? (It's ok if you haven't heard them; I'm just curious, just so I can know how much research to do, before pulling out the wallet.)

    JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege

After a couple years, I'm still loving my modded FD01s, and I'm now looking to find the equivalent sound, in a pair of open-back headphones. Open backs tend to suffer from severe sub-bass roll off, but I do remember listening to a set of Grado PS2000e's (at a pre-pandemic head-fi event) that...

Anyone in the SF South Bay Area?

Hi folks. I hosted the last Head-Fi meetup, in San Francisco last year. I had a great time doing it, and I'm not opposed to hosting it again. Like last year, my only requirement is that it can't be an all-day event. 4 hours was last year's duration, as I recall. But with setup and breakdown of...

    Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7b Impressions & Discussion Thread

Well neutral to my ears anyway. Folks have different opinions on neutrality, which is not surprising given that people's ears are different, and they may enjoy different kinds of music, and their ears are "burned in" to whatever their favorite headphones happens to currently be. But yeah, to me...

    Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7b Impressions & Discussion Thread

For the last month, I've been looking for a closed-back headphone counterpart to my favorite IEMs (a pair of modded JVC HA-FD01s). The candidate had to check a lot of boxes (affordable, non-leaky, detailed, neutral but enjoyable, lightweight, comfortable, easy-to-drive...). After a few weeks of...

Is a DAP audibly better (v.s. a Samsung phone) for easily-driven IEMs?

Is it worth buying a DAP, if the following are true? 1) I'm using modded JVC HA-FD01 IEMs (similar to the new Drop JVC HA-FDX1 IEMs). 2) I like my IEM's neutral signature and don't need to apply any EQ. 3) I'm listening on a Samsung Galaxy S7 phone, which easily drives these IEMs. 4) My phone...

    JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege

Sorry to say, but if you live in a high-humidity environment, you'll probably have the same issues. However, the FD01s do come with 3 sets of nozzles, so theoretically, if one set gets too wet, you can swap out a different set in under 30 seconds. Not sure if the Drop version will provide...

Low end. Cheap. Generic. Otherwise bang for buck cable thread!

Hi Tim. Thanks for your reply. I've looked through the links you've provided. A LOT of information to digest. What these links don't seem to convey (for a lack of a better word) is bendability. I like to wind up my cables super tight, and eventually they don't go back to their original straight...

    JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege

Straight down for me too. Partly because I'm used to it from JVC FX1100/1200, but also because it's easier to put on and take off, when wearing glasses.

    JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege

Yeah, if they don't include fiber inserts or nozzles that alter the sound in a meaningful way, what's the point?

    JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege

Hi George: Thanks for the update and comparison! I'm not surprised that IEMs costing many times more would sound better than the FD02s. I'm still perfectly content with my FD01s. They aren't the fastest IEMs, but that doesn't diminish my enjoyment of them, in the same way that my enjoyment of...

    JVC HA-FD01 Class S Solidege

George has already answered. For me, I don't think the FD01 is worth the extra price, if bought new. Used is another matter. If you can find it used, for a good price, I'd say get the FD01 for its ease of customization.

Hi @surfgeorge: Do you have any posts (with photos) of your tape mod? I'd like to try it on a spare set of nozzles. The cotton swab mod definitely smooths out the upper-mid peakiness, but (as you said) it also smooths out the treble. I'd like to experiment with the tape mode to restore all the...

San Francisco meetup CONFIRMED for March 30, 2019

Thanks for the lead. This past week, after a lot of almost clicking the buy button, on a couple different amps, I talked myself off the ledge. I really enjoyed the iFi (and the S.E.X.) amp, but can't bring myself to drop $400-600 just to drive my IEMs. It'd be a splurge rather than a necessity...

San Francisco meetup CONFIRMED for March 30, 2019

Thanks to everyone who attended. It was my pleasure to host the event. Being able to mix and match so many incredible amps, dacs, and headphones was a real treat for me. It also laid to rest a question on my mind, of whether it's worth buying/building an amp, just to drive my IEMs. After...

San Francisco meetup CONFIRMED for March 30, 2019

Hi. You don't have to bring anything fancy. Even a basic set of headphones or in-ear monitors is fine. But, you should try to bring... well... something. It's like going to a pot luck, and not bringing anything. That said, I'm not turning anyone away. If you're genuinely interested in the...

San Francisco meetup CONFIRMED for March 30, 2019

McPerk, I'll probably have some cash on hand, in case something blows me away (without also blowing a hole in my wallet). I've been holding back, on buying full-sized headphones though, because that's the audio gateway drug. That's how you really get hooked. Once you have a good set of cans...

Any interest in doing a local head-fi small gathering in SF?

I guess we'll find out if this works. I created a meetup event here, for members to sign up: https://www.meetup.com/Head-Fi-San-Francisco-2019/events/259664028/ If enough folks visit above and click to get added, great. If not, well, I guess I'll cancel it. I should know, in the next couple...
