"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

Well, my much anticipated modi/magni didn't arrive today. FedEx delayed the arrival date from today until Tuesday. My available time will be limited during the week. So, I'm stuck with my Sound Blaster card direct output. I'm using Rhythmbox in Linux right now, works fine.   BTW, I also...

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

Quote: Are you asking in general (why do I need an amp), or what does it do to these puppies specifically?   Remember that the listening experience is the complete end-to-end chain from the bit stream at the source to your brain. Assuming that everything else is top-notch (that's a...

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

My Mad Dogs have arrived safe and healthy!   OK, I said I wanted a "step up" from the Audio-Technica ATH-A900 gamer headphones. Instead of an expected 1/4" to 3.5 mm adapter, I get an entirely separate cable? Nice. Welcome to the neighborhood.   The modi/magni combo is expected...

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

OK, I couldn't resist. After not having any "serious" headphones for a while, I needed to get back on track. Due to my listening environment (noisy desktop PC fans), I needed a closed headphone. I was lamenting not being able get something in the same ballpark as a Senn HD650, HD600, Denon D600...

soldering iron advice and where to get 63/37 solder...

I have the Weller WLC-100 soldering station, around $52 US (+ tips) from Mouser http://www.mouser.com/index.cfm?hand..._pcodeid=57802 Mouser's product catalog listing: http://www.mouser.com/catalog/625/1659.pdf It's called an "economy" station, but that's compared to their workhorse $150...

what cans should i buy my sister.

I've got the Senn PX100's for the simple reason is that they're an open design. You need to pay attention to the outside world when you're walking / driving around. Easy to wear and are comfortable for long periods. Second on Cowon. Using the iAudio U2 / 1 GB. Works fine as a USB drive and...

Need to get into vinyl. Major help call!

Not to sound like a traitor, but there are a number of good turntable threads in the AVS forum. Like this one http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=639926 - Part of the CD Players & Dedicated Music Transports (NEW) forum. They don't have much interest in headphones (I referred them...

    PPA v2 construction discussion

Is bass boost common? I understand this is a topic that's left up to personal preference, but is it used in practice? It's simple enough to put in. What's a good cut-off frequency and level of boost ? I'm using Audio-Technica ATH-A900's (closed circumaural). The PPAv2 schematic parts give a...

    bass boost shelving filter equations

How critical is group delay? I just downloaded and ran tangent's Micro-cap simulation, plot attached. I'm not sure where the audible perception threshold is, i.e. how many mS can I get away with? Micro-Cap evaluation version 8.1.1.0 is reporting an error on start-up using tangent's file...

    Finally cased my PPAv2!

I'm still figuring out the parts list for my PPAv2. Do you want to show it off? Use clear plastic for the end panels and throw a couple of LEDs inside. Hammond only has black plastic for the 1455 series case- but a trip to the hardware store will fix that. Now, all you need to do is mod a PC...

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) - a lost topic?

I was wondering why I have not seen any discussions mentioning the risk of ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) and proper handling procedures? Any semiconductor is affected, not just op-amps.It might be helpful if the risks of ESD and the awareness of proper handling procedures were emphasized...

    PPA v2 construction discussion

Hello, I'm in the first stages of researching how to build a PPAv2. It's my first headphone amp (I'm not a beginner). I was wondering why I have not seen any discussions mentioning the risk of ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge). Op-amps (and any semiconductor) are affected by this, e.g. the AD8610...

Refurbished Sony SCD-CE595 SACD/CD changer for $90.00 shipped

My definition of "mid-fi" is good quality integrated electronics. "Integrated" IMHO is a combined input source selection / preamp / power amp. It should sound fairly accurate. An example would be a Yamaha RX-V2400 (what I have now). A "high-fi" system uses separate boxes for each function...

    Multiple CD Players

Don't forget the quality of the source material is the limiting factor. MP3 material is not the same as SACD. These units are optimized for MP3 and homebrew CD-R/W reproduction. Displaying the ID tags and buffering the tracks so you don't hear the gap between discs are nice features. There's...

Best Headphones (NOT In-Ear) for running?

Have you tried wearing a hat? Not a baseball cap, but something like a wool pull-over hat that skiers use. It's loose enough to fit over your head and will secure the headphones. You need to keep safety in mind and should stick with open designs. Using PX-100's here. It also keeps your head warm.

Nice CD player/changer for home system...

I just added my opinion (not a review, I just got it) of the SCD-CE595 at Gorthon's link: http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...=1#post1909988 Hellacious D: You need an amp for the SCD-CE595 - no headphone jack. You can set it to output 2-ch SACD for headphones.

    Multiple CD Players

Just got my SCD-CE595 today and giving it a shake-down run. I can't tell too much yet, as I also got this simultaneously with a new pair of Audio-Technica ATH-A900 headphones. Only a few hours on the headphones and running through a Nakamici RE-3 integrated receiver (temporary amplifier). Not...

Cold Heat Classic - Soldering Iron

This is a very nice iron for home use. I have a several tips to handle most applications. It's certainly not the same quality as the traditional "work-horse", but it certainly beats everything in this price class. Got mine from Mouser Electronics. They're more focused on the commercial trade...
