    Crack;Bottlehead OTL

I only use current production. Usually by Ohmite (USA) or Kamaya (Japan), depending on availability. They are both excellent, but cost 2-3 times more than film types. Vintage stuff like Allen Bradley are way too much money and trouble for my projects at the moment. However, the current...

Nice work there mate. I bet you are keeping yoursefl busy and enjoying it! Are you going to change all the resistors too? Sorry if you have already pointed that out, but I haven't been following all previous convo. I was just writing about resistors in another thread and I wonder what is your...

    Crack;Bottlehead OTL

Regarding tubes and mods that go well with them, I'd ike to add my two cents. I know this is probably a contentious issue, but my compulsive A/B tests seem to indicate that tubes do very well with carbon composite resistors. The difference (or improvement in my opinion) is not that huge, but it...

Yeah. It seems to be a good value. I like the simplicity of both the Crack and the Darkvoice. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think these are basically iterations of the Aren van Waarde project (itself based on an older Rudy van Stratum schematic). A basic topology of 2 double triodes with...

    Crack;Bottlehead OTL

I think, if one chooses to go with tube rectification then it's kind of 'counterproductive' to also apply an IC-based regulator in its path. It sort of defeats the purpose of choosing to forgo with the sand based rectification in the first place. Especially when you place an IC down the line...

Douk Audio Little Bear P7 headphone amp

I think my DIY PCB unit, is basically a very similar design to the P8. For anyone interested, I've posted a description along with pictures of the completed unit in here. If it isn't an exact copy, from what I gather, it should be a very similar affair. I have the schematics of it and might...

Little Bear P7 mods based off a P8 thread

Hello, I am pretty sure this Douk unit (especially Little Bear P8) is basically a reiteration of a common DIY PCB floating out there (or vice-versa). It has an SRPP pre-stage(with 2C51 tubes) + a cathode follower at the output (6080 tube). DC in the signal is then blocked by output capacitors...

    Sennheiser HD599 - first impressions.

Lehmann Black Cube Linear USBII, would be a good option. An excellent solid state amp with built in DAC. If that's a bit over budget, then let us know.

Sennheiser HD560S - a mix of two concepts

Thank you for your impressions. I am one of those folks that have been hoping for a new pair that could take advantage of the HD500-series shell design. In my opinion it is a really solid design. Both ergonomically and in terms of sound quality. All my 500-series headphones share a very nice...

Sennheiser HD560S - a mix of two concepts

I'm pretty curious regarding this new pair from Sennheiser, having owned several from the HD500-series plus a classic HD600 pair. It seems to combine interesting traits from both. If it achieves to blend their strong points by tuning them in succesfully, then we might get a great set. However...

Off topic, by i agree on that totally. Manual transmissions had been an absolute joy for so many owners.

    Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

Sennheiser has been doing great things over the years with their 6xx line (and also their 5xx series). Slowly improving on their design/sound, smoothing out the peaks and tuning their performance at the lower bands. HD600 is undoubtedly what made them a name in the global headphones market. The...

    Shure SRH1840 and SRH1440 Unveiled!

I mainly use two head amps, a solid state and one with valves. One is the Lehmann BCL (modified quite heavily) and the other one is a DIY tube OTL design with SRPP topology. Both are desktop-type with linear power supplies so no real issues with power-hungry cans. They are fed by a separate XMOS...

    Shure SRH1840 and SRH1440 Unveiled!

That is helpful, since I'm considering R70X as one of the pairs to try out in the future. Right now I am using an HD599 with an upgraded DIY cable (2 twisted pairs of 24AWG solid copper) and I am pretty happy with it. I use it daily for long hours and when I first tried it I became so enamored...

    Shure SRH1840 and SRH1440 Unveiled!

Thanks. Sound-stage depth is the image space projected in an axis forward of you, in a 3D fashion so to speak. Assuming you were facing a live stage, it'd be the sense of depth of that stage in front of you. Some gear for example are good at projecting a wide image from left/right, up/down but...

    Shure SRH1840 and SRH1440 Unveiled!

Can you talk a bit more about sound-stage width and depth among the three (HD600, R70X and SRH1440)?

    Sennheiser HD599 - first impressions.

Actually, out of the HD6xx series, a reasonable option in regards to better sound-stage and overall value would probably be the HD6XX from Massdrop. It's probably better, even marginally, in terms of sound-stage and sound profile compared to the standard HD600. But again, might not be worth the...

OK. Nobody claims that the HD599 have the absolute best. What types of music do you usually play on these?

    Sennheiser HD599 - first impressions.

Yeah. Regarding the HD700, always wanted to give them a try as well. But cost has been prohibitive and unfortunately haven't found a way to demo them either. Hopefully i will, eventually.

    Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

Might be like that for some folk, no doubt. Never felt the need for EQ though. Maybe it has to do with my hearing and the music i listen to (?). For example, I know i hear nada above 15-16kHz and have a serious sensitivity in the presence region.

    Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

If you followed the whole convo, you'd realize that I have them for quite some time. Pairing them with different types of amps along the way and really wanting to like them, since they cost more than my other cans. Alas, it's what it is. Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

    Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

The thread is about impressions. And what better way there is to state your impressions, than by comparison? In short, I believe it's perfectly appropriate to compare the HD600 to other headphones on this thread.

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Thanks! And what about the sound-stage?? My main issue with the HD600 is that they lack depth and width making the music a bit 2D. Is there an improvement with the Audio Technica over the HD600?

    Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

So, I took the HD600 out of their box: Plugged them into the OTL amp: front view rear view And listen to them on a variety of music. James Brown 'Papa don't take no mess', The Doors 'When the music is over' and Albert King 'Cadillac assembly line' Overall, I did like what this amp does...
