Yup.  I like to use my E17 as a USB DAC with my laptop and want to replace it with the X7.  That's what's holding me back.

While riding, with or without earplugs, you can't hear anything.  I'd rather protect my ears while riding.  Most people in cars are oblivious as to what's going on around them anyways.  If they weren't, they WOULD pull over for emergency vehicles (which I do).  They wouldn't cut people off...

Those laws refer to cars. Laws regarding motorcycles are different. I remember reading somewhere that iems were outlawed somewhere, but earplugs and intercoms weren't affected. Regardless, I'm not going to stop wearing earplugs. The ringing in my ears when I forget the plugs is unbearable. And...

I would use the internal for the files that I would never want to be without. The removable would be for everything else.

Not as far and wide as I'd like.  I wanted to go to the Yucatan this year, but a neck issue nixed that.  Next year, I'm thinking Labrador.

Where is it illegal.  I've ridden all over the western US, Canada, and Alaska and never heard a peep about it being illegal.  The LEOs that ride all wear earplugs when they ride (not sure about on the job).  And the few times that I have been pulled over, I always point to my ears when they walk...

sound quality is merely ok.  It's essentially the equivalent of elevator music in the background.  When I'm at home any device I use will be used as a dac for my laptop.

If you think about it a lot of newer cares almost completely block out exterior noise. Combine that with a stereo, and you wouldn't hear the fire engine in the next lane. I when I went to Alaska last year I would guess %75-80% of riders listened to music. The other 20-25& had -31-34db ear plugs...

It's a wireless intercom system. I wear earplugs as well. Most riders you see that do any kind of distance wear earplugs anyways.

Is there a player out there $500-$1000 that will be a dramatic improvement over my Apple Touch? I need Bluetooth for use on the motorcycle.

I bought an X3ii to hold me over.  It just isn't going to work for me.  The 5800 file limit is a deal killer, and I was mistakenly under the impression that there was a firmware update to fix that.  Now I'm trying to decide if I should wait for the X7.  Get the AK100ii. Or the X5ii.  Right now...
