SPDIF is a consumer-grade variant of AES. The protocol is slightly different. But not by much.

I also thought he said somewhere that USB was now his number one preferred input source. To be fair, in the quote above he says USB above SPDIF but doesn’t mention AES. Regardless I agree the point is maybe: it’s marvelous, who would know the difference?

No, it’s not. For example, Denafrips DACs as well as my Singxer SDA-6 let it control volume over USB just fine.

It was a surprise to me to on my Mac. Indeed, no volume control over USB. Haven’t tested on Windows or Linux. Is this a standard thing with Unison?
