I use the SVS Triband and have had zero issues. The less expensive one should also be fine.

Not a dumb question at all. With a USB drive connected to the NODE it can operate independently of a PC. Control would be done via a tablet/smartphone. I believe the same would be true of the Wiim Ultra and the Cambridge Audio MXN10 that @sixergixer just mentioned.

Check out something like the Bluesound NODE. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_813NODEBK/Bluesound-NODE-Black.html. It can play files from an external HDD/SSD as well as act as an endpoint for Spotify, Qobuz etc. There are others but this is the only one I can recommend based on experience as I own...

Makes sense. As a pilot, aviation scenes in movies can be hard to watch (looking at you, Top Gun). Probably the same for submariners, lawyers, cops, et al.

Wait. What? I thought you despised Roon? For a second I was going to ask why you weren't using a NUC/Roon ROCK but then I remembered just how inexpensive the base Mac Mini really is. Plus, to your point, you can use other library management software options if Roon no longer suits your needs.
