IanCanada UcPure Quad pure ultracapacitor power supply. Fabulous!

Once I get to building the DAC itself sound character will be an important consideration. Currently I've got the Denafrips Venus I wonder what is out there in terms of DIY DAC boards that sound similar.

IanCanada UcPure Quad pure ultracapacitor power supply. Fabulous!

Interesting point, I've played around with my system quite a bit down to the coupling caps etc. quite happy with the overall sound character I'm really just looking to improve what I have. What I am really looking to do is to get the soundstage, dynamics and timing I get out of my record player...

IanCanada UcPure Quad pure ultracapacitor power supply. Fabulous!

Hi, yes in terms of value I can see how the UC conditioner is unbeatable. What I will do is build an external clock with the UC conditioner and the purepi as my power source. Then I can upgrade, of course the dream would be to have a full DAC powered with only ultra capacitors but this would be...

IanCanada UcPure Quad pure ultracapacitor power supply. Fabulous!

Hi thanks for this post. I've been looking at Ian Canada's solutions. I am going to build a clock for my DAC to start off and get some practice then probably build a full DAC later. Do you have experience with his other stuff such as clocks etc?

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

Bypassing the copper caps with an FT-2 or FT-3 is an interesting suggestion. I have actually ended up bypassing my 0.47uf Audyn True Copper caps with some (very small 1000pf if I remember correctly) LCR polystyrene capacitors. This opens up the high end and introduces a little more detail.  ...

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

Audyn True Copper and FT-3 The True Copper and FT-3 are both caps which have ended up in my pre-amp. FT-3 on the inputs and True Copper on the outputs. While I had been working with NOS caps quite a bit I had not had a chance to compare these to high-end modern caps. Luckily then I came...

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

The names of the caps are written on the sides in Russian lettering. Just search for them on ebay and you will see the difference.

Hi Jac,   No need to be apologetic. At least this clears things up.

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

Hi Jac,   Your findings are quite interesting, it may well be that the MBGOs are more mid range focused than I had thought. I have been working on my system a lot resulting in constant changes to it's sound signature so it can be difficult to judge the frequency balance of the caps. I do...

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

Don't have much experience with tube rolling but yes, with caps you can really tune your system. It's good you have some modern caps for reference, it will be interesting to see how the Audyn True Copper caps stack up as they are highly regarded. What values are you working with? I might have...

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

Take a look at this video the third designation refers to "the index number of the exact design type". Looks like they are just a slightly different variation of the same cap. It is probably just the voltage rating, caps with higher voltage ratings usually do sound a bit better.   While we are...

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

I think what the seller means is that the K75, K40 and K42 are of the same quality in terms of transparency and so on. Don't think he is saying their sonic characteristics are similar.

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

Mcandmar, this looks like an interesting cap. They seem to be relatively compact which can be a good thing. I might have to buy a few of these to see how they sound.   The green centre and metal case is something a bunch of different Russian caps seem to share. The K71s also use it. The green...

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

I cant think of any modern PIO caps that would satisfy your 50+ uf / 250V range. Are you sure you need 250v? There might be some Western Electric caps out there that do though. In any case I would go with NOS caps. There is actually a good chance that the motor runs you have in your amp now...

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

Interesting, I might have to order a few smaller value teflon caps then to bypass those 0.25uf caps in the pre.

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

Thanks for the compliment Jamie. The MBGCH-1 are definitely worth a try especially considering the price! It looks like your using K72-6 caps to bypass those MBGOs. What sort of ratio are you using to bypass and how does this improve things?

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

Paper in Oil cap comparison   In the last couple of weeks I have been experimenting with some different paper in oil capacitors. I have tried the K40y, MBGO-2, and MBGCH-1. These caps are very interesting as they can be as transparent and open as teflon caps yet much more fleshy, and lush. I...

Orgy of Capacitors: The Cap Thread

Hi Nada, interesting post and good questions. First your suggestion of using an aluminium box housing might well be worth a try. You could just use a piece of pipe for this purpose which would not be too expensive. For me at least part of the appeal of these Russian caps is their excellent...

Yulong Sabre D18 thread: reviews, impressions, discussion (full review added 2/5)

Interesting stuff, and I agree. I wouldn't hesitate to buy more Yulong products. I'm quite happy with my D18. It really sounds quite nice, not as musical as my record player but its very good in its own right. By upstream you mean USB cables and the USB to SPDIF converter? I'm currently using...

That would be pretty awesome. I would really want to know how the D18 stack up against more recent DACs in general.

Rant - unresanable buyer wants to return items.

Yes, in the end it was his rudeness that just did not make me want to accept any return. If he had been polite and explained his situation I would have seriously considered it. All he had to do was say to me 'listen, this is not what I had in mind when I bought this stuff could I return some of...
