Yep, that's definitely the case. My guess is that you're in pretty good shape with pentodes right now, I was just reminded of the GEC KT8C when you posted your picture of the GEC 807, so I was curious if you had compared them.

That's always hard to quantify as it's definitely circuit specific. They are very smooth, robust sounding tubes with a nice bottom end. In the near future, I'll do a more formal comparison between the GEC KT8C, GEC KT66 and Mullard EL37 (and possibly Mullard EL38). I think that would be a...

I can totally understand that. I've got a couple pairs of them. Nice tubes when available.

Indeed. The good news is that I knew where my towel was.

Yeah, there's a lot that goes into building pianos. I once remove the soundboard from a 100k+ Steinway concert grand. I thought the process would be intricate, but it was done with a mallet and a 2x4. There was significantly more care involved when installing the replacement. :)

No, slightly different (thicker). But feel free to try the Bokeh hybrids on there and see what you think.

    Aegis DIY Tube Headphone Amplifier

Well, that's rather excellent. I have a plan for mine as well that involves wood on three of the sides and the top, but I haven't had time to implement it. It'll be thinner than your top, so it won't be as visually striking, but I'm still looking forward to making it.

Yeah, I believe the hybrid pads will be the stock pads on these. That tends to be what I prefer on them as well.

Yeah, it's not a surprise that the VC (or VO or AO or AC) would work best on the high impedance. I was a bit surprised that I prefer the CC on the medium setting, but there you have it.

Just curious, do you find yourself using different impedance settings? I built the DIY version first and I love it, but I find I use the different impedance settings a lot and possibly the middle setting the most often. On my DIY version, I typically leave it on low because the amp is in my...

What day of the week is it? I find I use the RCA 5691s most in the 6SL7 position of my pre-production Aegis. I have a pair of Brimar 6SL7s in my DIY build. For the power tubes, I think my favorites so far are the GEC KT66 and the 2nd gen Tung-Sol 6550, but there are a bunch of others that I...

Yeah, I find that different tube types often make a significant difference. It's been cool being able to run 6V6s, 6L6GC, EL34, KT66 and KT88s in the same amp without having bias concerns.

    AXEL GRELL HEADPHONE

Without making a comment on the pricing of headphones, I would say that used pricing on pianos is a hard thing to use as a metric as it is extremely hard to sell used pianos due to their sheer size. I used to work above a company that refinished pianos and they often got pianos for free if they...

Cayin HA-300MK2 (2022) TOTL Transformer coupled Direct Heated Triode Tube HeadAmp (Page 91)

I've always found matching to be more important with power tubes (particularly when used in a fixed bias amp). But that's just my personal take. Others will disagree.

I don't know if Langrex keeps track of the measurements, but that's the first thing that I'd ask. If they have the measurements, they should be able to send you something roughly in the rang. That said, I'm not sure how critical matching is for this particular application.

Hmmm, have you compared the Phillips Holland EL38 to the Mullard UK EL38? I have a couple of pairs of Mullards, but haven't heard the Holland variants yet.

I will be absolutely gobsmacked if you don't try tube rolling in it. The urge is just too strong.

Yeah, those RCA 6550 look clean. Very strong gettering on the sides. Honestly, 215 Euro isn't bad for a new, clean pair of those.
