Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

Wonderful! I've been searching everywhere for a way to use HRIRs on my Android phone so I will give this a shot. I already have all of my HRIRs in TrueStereo format (as well as HeSuVi) because my DAW convolution plugin only supports TrueStereo, so this should be easy for me to try. By the...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I'll send over my data folder from Impulcifer and you can mess around with the files as you'd like. My ITD number from Impulcifer was about 187.5 for the right ear variance to the FL channel, and that's with a the speakers at an equilateral triangle, at arms length from me and from each other...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

This is great information, thank you! That rule about attenuating reflections within 20ms to -30 db makes a lot of sense, while leaving the rest in-place but low enough not to muddy everything up. I'm not sure how realistic of a goal that would be in my room, but I'll definitely try to shoot for...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I've done some work in REW, though not while using the in-ear mics. I've only used it for manually correcting the EQ of my room outside of use with Impulcifer. I will have to try using it for my next set of measurements. Speaking of in-ear mics, I just ordered the MS-TBF-2-MKII from Sound...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I love how far you've taken this, it's brilliant! How are you implementing this dry-bass crossover? I want to try the same thing out but the technique I use involves running audio through a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for real-time processing. I'd like to create hesuvi-compatible IR .wav...

This is super cool, I am very curious to see how you like the results!

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I'll check out the audio file later today, no time right now, but I'm curious about something. What happens when you run Impulcifer and use the Decay parameter as you wish, and then perform the volume change in Audacity to the final hesuvi.wav that Impulcifer generates? I'm not entirely sure...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

Oh, no worries, I probably should have mentioned this to begin with, haha. The hum eliminator would go between your audio interface's input and your u3's output. You'll need a 3.5mm stereo to dual 6.35mm splitter cable and a regular dual 6.35mm (aka, 1/4") cable. You would plug the 3.5mm...

Could be a ground loop in your signal chain. I have a couple of these things around whenever I run into them and they do a great job of eliminating that specific issue: https://www.amazon.com/Compact-Mini-Hum-Eliminator-Box/dp/B00BARTW42

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

Yes, AutoEQ. It's been several years since I've tried that method so I'm afraid I can't be much more specific. Yes, it's basically identical except that I'm burning the EQ directly into the BRIR wave file once I've tweaked the EQ to taste. This allows me to more easily use the BRIRs on...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

The EQ processing I use is after any room correction has been done by Impulcifer. I've tried it both ways by using the AutoEQ-style eq.csv to adjust earlier in the Impulcifer pipeline, but I prefer to adjust the EQ after the BRIR has been completely generated since I can modify it in real time...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I believe the primary method for doing this is explained in the second paragraph of the Headphone Compensation section of the Impulcifer documentation: That said, I do all my personal EQ tweaks after the BRIR has been generated by Impulcifer by applying EQ directly to the BRIR file using Audacity.

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I just use media keys on my keyboard or my headphone amp's volume knob. Simple, but it works!

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I've been so satisfied with my favorite BRIRs with both my HD 8XX and my Anandas that I haven't bothered taking any new captures in over a year. I still use Impulcifer every single day with both my work computer and my personal computer, too. I have speakers but rarely use them because I live in...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by being unhappy with the headphone correction but being happy with the BRIR. The BRIR does headphone correction unless one disables headphone compensation. If you don't like the resulting frequency response of the BRIR then I would recommend trying different...

Yes, those are the MS-TFB-2 in the photos. That POM-27301 DOES look very similar.

    Studio Monitors vs Headphones

Speakers are 1000% better than headphones without HRTF for me, but using Impulcifer has actually made me prefer my headphones more than my speakers these days. It provides the best of both worlds: the natural FR, tonality, imagining, and spatial-cues that make speakers so great, combined with...

I use the Atom Amp+ by JDS Labs and would definitely recommend that. Fairly cheap compared to a lot of amps that output similar amounts of power, more than enough for me to drive my HD8XXs, so I think it would fare well with your pair.

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I got my Ananda's replacement pads in last week and so I tried making measurements with both my new HD8XX and the Ananda in order to compare them as closely as possible. Long story short, the HD8XX's results with Impulcifer are just flat-out better. They sound sharper, have stronger...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I've been using my new HD8XXs for about 4 hours so far today and so I figured I should post follow up for those who might be interested in how my experience is going so far with them in comparison to my Anandas. First things first: their stock, un-equalized frequency response is complete...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

Well, I did it fellas. I just ordered a pair of Senny+Drop HD8XXs. I've been waiting for a good excuse to try them for a while now and my trusty Ananda's right earpads just came apart at the seams due to the glue weakening and that was as good an excuse as any. I know, I know, that's a rather...

Full-sized headphones with detail competing with Etymotic ER4SR?

My current daily driver is a Hifiman Ananda, which I enjoy overall, but I recently bought a pair of Etymotic ER4SR IEMs and their detail retrieval is a significant step up. I can hear things with them that I just can't hear on the Anandas, even esoteric stuff like minor changes in crossfeed...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I really like my LP-6s and am looking forward to hearing what your think of them. Unrelated, but I recently bought the Etymotic ER4SR IEMs and I'm really, really liking them with Impulcifer BRIRs. Maybe even more than I like them with my Anandas. There's something special about just how much...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

I believe so, but I think a physician is required to perform the insertion? I heard the mics are expensive, too. I remember asking someone who worked with audiologist on another forum about them and I think he said are north of 1,000 USD, though he didn't specify the exact amount. That's not...

Recording Impulse Responses for Speaker Virtualization

Very interesting mics, I hadn't thought about trying those. It looks like getting consistent results with those rubber caps would be pretty easy compared to gluing the metal capsules of the mics I'm using to foam earplugs.
