    HD800 being bassy?

Yes I was using the Jotunheim at the time (which is known to be aggressive/sorta bright).

    HD800 being bassy?

When I bought an HD800 I was surprised at its sound too. It has recessed upper midrange, which leads to a warmish tilt to most of the audible information you hear. The 6khz spike is a bit different compared to the usual 8-10khz spike that most headphones have. It's more of a clan and bite...

DUNU X Gizaudio DaVinci Impressions Thread

I'm not sure what the output impedance of the usb-c to 3.5mm of the apple dongle is, I reckon it's probably pretty low since it's a modern product. I did quick a/b comparison between the dongle and my Jotunheim just now and yeah the apple dongle sounds warmer overall as a result of a more...

DUNU X Gizaudio DaVinci Impressions Thread

My DaVinci sounded noticeably more mid-bassy out of the iphone dongle and phone than through my Jotunheim. I can't a/b them side by side at the moment, but at some point I will. Either way, I think they sound better through the Jotunheim (probably).

DUNU X Gizaudio DaVinci Impressions Thread

Got my DaVinci in today. I'm more of a headphones guy, and my prior experience with IEMs weren't great. I had the Hifiman RE400 at first, which was ultra congested and shout city. Then I had the Massdrop Plus IEM, which was better on the shout and congestion part, but still not great. Stream...

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Tough to call it an upgrade when the two do different things for me. In terms of sonics, the Elex does things that many headphones even costing up to 2,000 dollars can't do. The Focals have this sense of tactility and energy to their sound that I haven't heard elsewhere. It's not that their...

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Earpads being small is somewhat required for their sound signature. The drivers have an inherent excess of energy around 7.6khz. The small openings of the stock pads do a great job at filtering that down to manageable levels for a more balanced treble response. With larger pads and larger...

Does it make sense to be an audio purist?

This isn't the 70s and EQs won't add any discernable amount of distortion of phase effects to your music to 'lessen' its purity. I think if you aren't EQ'ing these days to correct small issues you aren't tying to go for purity.

Dan Clark Audio E3 Review: Interview, Measurements, Impressions

These are the most useful reviews. I don't need some goofball with 10,000 dollar power conditioners and 20,000 dollar interconnects telling me how organic something sounds.

Dan Clark Audio E3 Review: Interview, Measurements, Impressions

Well it is listed as 40g heavier than the Stealth, which is not an insignificant number. Will you continue the Ether line with lighter weight alternatives? Another question, what acoustic properties/advantages would a flat backing have over a back that is angled/rounded or irregular in shape?

Dan Clark Audio E3 Review: Interview, Measurements, Impressions

I have some questions. Why E3 as opposed to Ether3? You pride yourself on making lightweight headphones, so why use glass for the backing of the cups instead of something that's rigid yet lighter? Are those two holes on the backs of the cups bass ports?

Massdrop x Focal Elex Review & Measurements

Got my Elex in yesterday. I had tried out an Elear a long time ago when I used to be into the journey. First impressions of the Elex are as follows: -Yeah the cables really are as bad as they say. Super stiff and prone to kinking. I have to work potential future kinks out every time I put...

Massdrop x Focal Elex Review & Measurements

Jeez, I had just ordered an Elex off headphones.com and I started hearing about the large number of failing drivers people are experiencing with them. I hope Focal has either quietly resolved the voice coil issue or they have a good RMA experience.

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Ok guys last post with measurements for a long while, I promise. It seems as though the R70X uses some very capable drivers and the enclosure/earpad interaction looks to have very minimal ringing, so it makes a good candidate for EQ. I'm generally against EQ as it can ruin the timbre...

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Day1 of trying to improve the sound of the Brainwavz Velour XL pads. I tried differing layers of felt, both with and without small holes in the center of them. Much to my surprise, the holes were the worst variations. What ended up being the best was 1 layer of 2-ply TP applied inside each...

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

So a handful of days ago I ordered some Brainwavz Velour Memory Foam XL pads after reading some suggestions on them when it came to improving the comfort of the R70X. I received them today and promptly put them on my R70X to listen-- and feel-- them. First thing's first, their comfort is out...

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

I think their soundstage is rather average-- just slightly outside your head. Imaging however is fantastic. Sound decays in such a natural and airy way without exaggerated emphasis on upper treble. Instruments sound 'free' and 'lifted.'

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Very first impressions of these! They are exceptionally compact and lightweight. Featherweight if you will. I've been so accustomed to my AD700 and over monstrously large open planars over the past several years that these feel like a toy by comparison. Their build quality and appearance...

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Ok thanks for the replies guys. The best comparison I can find is Rtings's objective reviews of the R70x and AD700x-- which should be similar to the AD700-- it looks like the clamping pressure is very similar, and earpad style also somewhat similar. I'll go ahead and give these a shot and...

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

I'm not too terribly concerned about driving them or in-depth sound qualities. I have the Jotunheim that can dish out enough juice, and the Ether2 when I want to listen to music. I'm mostly looking for comfort (mostly in the form of light weight and low clamping force), and then neutrality in...

    Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

Hey guys, I haven't been on this forum in forever. My longtime companions the AD700s are on their final legs. I've gone through so many headphones on my 8 year journey back in the day, and the AD700 were one of the first two headphones I've bought that are still with me 13 years later. For me...

Is 'slam'/'macrodynamics'/'impact' a real thing? (Outside of frequency response)

A lot of the supposedly more dynamic headphones agreed upon by subjective listening happen to have higher amounts of distortion than the ones that are of very low distortion. As an example, the Abyss just completely falls apart at really high SPLs.
