I could listen to it just fine on a decently-crowded CanJam floor, and my listening volumes tend to just be below average. I’d say they’re more along the lines of pressure-relief-equipped IEMs, and more isolating than the Softears DD IEMs.

Awesome! Have a great time, mate! I met her and saw her play at Musikmesse a few years ago. ‘Been itching to go back since. 😁 Alter Ego!

1000%. Whenever someone asks me to recommend an IEM that’s good for genre X, I tell them it depends on how they want genre X to sound. :D

For me, the Ronin’s mushiness isn’t ‘cus of its drivers. It’s the tuning. Either it’s a bit rich in the upper-bass/low-mids, or it doesn’t quite have enough treble to cut that richness with IMO (they’re basically the same thing). I mean, that’s part of its romantic, lush appeal. It just didn’t...

It depends on listening volume too, I think. I’ve long wondered why I don’t mind the FW’s treble, despite typically hating any amount of treble elevation. I’ve since discovered that I listen at a lower volume than most people, and the FW’s extra energy actually makes it super engaging at those...

As @drftr said, 6dB is 6dB. Driver types mainly affect a note’s texture and weight. DDs are the slowest, but pack the biggest punch, ESTs are agile, but can sometimes feel wispy or floaty, and BAs are somewhere in between. But, when it comes to amplitude, they’re virtually identical. They’re...

I have friends who've owned the Kr5, and their issues with it aren't so much bass bloat. Rather, it's the lack of upper-midrange presence to balance out the lows and highs, as @drftr mentioned. I think that's how you have darkness and brightness at the same time in the Kr5. It's dark because its...

Heard the Dio? I’ve heard a couple prototypes; one much more finished than the other. But, I’m not gonna comment too much on how it sounds out of respect for Lee. Based on how it performed against other TOTLs I heard at CanJam SG (including far pricier ones already discussed on this thread), I’d...

Hmm... I still think it's far too bassy to even consider for mixing or mastering. But, we'll agree to disagree there. :D The Ronin is the only IEM in the past 2-3 years that I couldn't fit in my typically agreeable ears. If you're gonna go Ronin, see if they have a custom option.

UM already took the brunt of the heat. The Dio’s gonna look pretty reasonable now. 🤭 Hey Caleb! Always happy to see you ‘round, friend. Speaking of the Dio, it actually sounds perfect for you what you want. Without being too specific, I’ll say that the current iteration of it doesn’t tick all...

Their current estimate is somewhere next year. I appreciate them taking their time with a big flagship release, to be honest.

I was surprised at some people calling it a mini-Raven or a reference EE model, because I (and everyone else I talked to) heard a lot of bass. :D I think the Triton's slow drop from bass to low-mids already opposes the ODIN's sound, which had an exponential drop from there. It's what gave it its...

Ahh, I don’t know. I last tried the VE X a couple months ago, and none of the IEMs here are close enough to it (apart from the Terra, in spirit) to make meaningful comparisons with.

I’ll raise my hand as one of the outliers who preferred the OG Pilgrim over the Noir. Yes, the Noir did have a more forward midrange, as well as a very slight technical improvement. But, I personally liked the balance and instrument positioning of the OG more. If the pricing rumors are to be...

Yup, it’s the same with films and TV as well. It’s why I’m so adamant about owning physical media or having local files, at minimum. We’ll never know when a piece of art we love suddenly becomes completely inaccessible.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’m completely aware of that. I made a similar post on this very topic some time ago talking about how some records can be 90% artist and 10% producer, or 50% of either, or even 100% record label. Sometimes, the artists aren’t even in the room when final mix and master...

Well, music in the 2010’s and onwards maybe, and for a select set of genres as well. Otherwise, I’d say the studio with speakers is far more likely.

I've said this in the past, but as the artist intended is like the paramount of marketing BS in audio. The reality is, most music is recorded, edited, mixed and mastered in an extremely well-treated studio with speakers from Adam Audio, or Focal, or Genelec, etc. So, the only way to truly...

I sometimes feel guilty when someone poses questions like these and I’m not able to help; probably an effect of my reviewing days. The fact of the matter is, a lot of the budget in-ears mentioned here are unfortunately not the easiest to demo. This thread is often the first time I’ve heard of...

Hey all! 'Happy to report that I've just finished editing all the pictures from CanJam SG 2024. Now, all I have to do is turn my belligerent notes into actual impressions. I didn't A/B them, but based on memory, the Alter Ego has a more explosive, dynamic sorta presentation. They aren't far apart in terms of body (when the Alter Ego is in its fuller tuning mode), but the Alter Ego has harder edges and a punchier timbre. The VE X is more relaxed and light - elegant...

I thought it had the standard amount of isolation IEMs typically provide. I'm with you in that I think it's semi-open. I drove it very easily out of my R8ii. It's an average-sized IEM. No one at the show had any fit issues AFAIK. Here's a photo of it on top of a standard-sized IEM case:
