Cameras and cellphones coexist also. I like things devoted to specific tasks, rather than a Swiss army knife type of product when it comes to music.

Sorry for my ignorance. I see the player has a line / spdif out. Does that output permit transfer of a digital signal comprising lossless music encoded at the highest resolution? I see it has a balanced output also. What is the advantage of having that?

Do any phones have a digital out? If so, you can always use the external dac of your choice if you want to.

This is disappointing, there should not be any difference since it is a digital output. I use the coax a lot with DAPs, so if there is a problem with the coax output, that would make me look elsewhere.

Thank you jj69 and DrSheep for advice on DAPs. In addition to the IBasso products, the Sony A15/16/17 is an option, but unfortunately, the Clip+ and FiiO X1 are not because I need 128GB of memory and want a digital output too.
