Sennheiser HD800 S Impressions Thread (read first post for summary)

Is anyone aware of a protective travel case for the HD800s that does NOT require you to detach the headphone cables to store it? I don't want to detach the cable from the headphone every time I store it because of multiple reports of the cable connection point breaking when attempting to detach...

Massdrop x Focal Elex Review & Measurements

The Elex, Elear and Clear all use an aluminium driver. Aluminium (unlike steel or magnesium) does not have a 'fatigue limit' - meaning that it can only withstand a finite, limited number of deformation cycles before it fails completely and therefore deforms without returning to its original...

Mod House Audio Tungsten - Planar Magnetic Headphones - Impressions and Discussion

How is the dynamics, macro-contrast, slam, and impact (i.e. overall sense of physical tactility) on this headphone? Do kick drums hit with the force of the entire universe imploding? The Tungsten is meant to be the spiritual successor to the Hifiman HE6 - and by most accounts the most special...

    Audeze LCDX Vs Hifiman HE6

Just digging up this thread because it reminds me of back in the day when everyone used to say that the LCDx had more 'slam' or 'punch' than the Hifiman HE6, but then Resolve from The Headphone Show started saying that no actually the HE6 has more slam than pretty much any headphone including...

    Sony MDR-MV1

How secure is the fit for using in a busy studio environment? Like, does it fall off your head forwards if you look down, or fall off your head backwards if you look up? Or does it stay securely in place? Please let me know if you have a big/medium/small head for reference...

Schiit Jotunheim 2 - Impressions Thread

I was using the internal DAC of the multibit Jot 2. Using windows, and exclusive mode. Now have switched to Apple Music and no such popping is taking place...

Schiit Jotunheim 2 - Impressions Thread

It's strange though, because using a different DAC/amp (Topping DX5) with Qobuz, there are no clicks or pops - only the Jotunheim 2 + Qobuz combo produces the small pop noises. But do those pops send high voltage spikes to the headphones to fry the voice coils? They're pretty quiet - but I...

Schiit Jotunheim 2 - Impressions Thread

I'm not sure what's going on. In Qobuz, if I use one USB port plugged into the Jotunheim, I a get a tiny pop before playback of a track, if I use another USB port plugged into it I get a tiny pop after playback. If I use any other player (Spotify, Apple Music...etc...) there are no pops at all.

Schiit Jotunheim 2 - Impressions Thread

Update, the issue actually resolved when plugging in the Jotunheim to another USB port on my USB hub... Still, is it possible that the tiny popping noise I heard on stopping tracks when it was plugged into the other port could have damaged my headphones drivers?

Schiit Jotunheim 2 - Impressions Thread

Does anyone hear a tiny pop that is audible in the headphones about half a second after stopping playback of a track (but leaving the amp on - not switching it off)...? I hear that - does it mean the unit is defective? (Sounds good in all other ways). Only happens In Qobuz... Worse still, is...

How easy is it for an underpowered amp to damage headphones?

Yeh, my understanding is that you should rather connect a headphone to a literal nuclear power station that will obliterate your eardrums at 0.0001% of the volume pot than connect it to a slightly underpowered amp. You can actually never damage a headphone by giving it too much power (even if...

How easy is it for an underpowered amp to damage headphones?

I have the Arya V2 though (not the Stealth magnet version) which has lower sensitivity and requires more power. Even though I didn't hear any audible distortion when running it with the dongle DAC - could I have been causing micro-damage that will slightly degrade the sound quality?

More bass slam: ZMF Aeolus or Focal Clear?

Which of these two dynamic driver headphones gives the most bass impact, physicality, tactility and slam? By those qualities I mean slam independent of volume or level - i.e. even when the headphone is playing at whisper-quiet decibel levels, the force of the bass slam should be able to give...

How easy is it for an underpowered amp to damage headphones?

I've been using a Cayin RU6 DAC dongle with a (non-stealth) Hifiman Arya. By all accounts the RU6 does not have enough power to drive the non-stealth Arya 'properly'. However, on high gain on the RU6 I get to 50 out of 100 on the volume scale to achieve a comfortable listening level. At this...

Which planar headphones has the best bass slam?

I agree, but not many people seem to rate them for bass slam? Not sure why? To me, they sound as slammy as Focal Clears...

    Hifiman HE6-SE

Too loose a headphone IMO is more annoying that too tight and almost gives you neck ache because you subconsciously hold your neck stiff to prevent the headphone flopping forwards or backwards off your head whenever you look up/down. Not tried the SE1 specifically, but the suspension headband...

    Hifiman HE6-SE

Vancouver is a sunny getaway (at least compared to anywhere else in Canada), consider yourself lucky! Circling back to macro-contrast/slam - from my understanding it is a quality unrelated to both frequency response and volume. If a headphone has great dynamics it should be able to make a kick...

    Hifiman HE6-SE

It's very difficult to know what to expect from the concept of bass slam/dynamicism/macro-contrast/physicality being a quality that is unrelated to frequency response and unrelated to volume. Does that mean that we should expect a kick drum to somehow have the energy of a nuclear explosion...

    Hifiman HE6-SE

Haha, are you sure you don't care about it that much - you were positively giggling when you reviewed the original HE6 in the 3-way HE6 vs HE6SE V1 vs HE6SE V2 comparison because you were so impressed with the 'macro-contrast' of the bass/bass slam. So if we added the original HE6 in to that...

Upgrading from Audeze LCD-X (2021) to Hifiman HE6se V2 for more bass slam?

Cool. And have you heard the Focal Clear? That's the other frequently mentioned 'slammy boy' for open-back bass. Does the HE6se V2 have harder slamming bass than it?

    Hifiman HE6-SE

Hey, can you please put the following 3 in order for bass slam (most to least) - HE6se V2, LCD-X and Focal Clear?

Upgrading from Audeze LCD-X (2021) to Hifiman HE6se V2 for more bass slam?

Great, thanks. It must be difficult to quantify but when you say 'it will beat out' the 6SE v2 - do you mean subtly be more impactful where you have to carefully A/B them to discern the difference, or do you mean like night and day difference they leave the 6SE V2 in the dust for bass slam?

Upgrading from Audeze LCD-X (2021) to Hifiman HE6se V2 for more bass slam?

I see you have the OG. Does the OG HE6 give significantly more bass slam than the HE6se V2 assuming both are powered by a nuclear reactor of an amp?

Upgrading from Audeze LCD-X (2021) to Hifiman HE6se V2 for more bass slam?

According to Resolve from The Headphone Show and headphones.com, the Hifiman HE6 original (long discontinued and very difficult to find on the used market) is something of a king of dynamic bass slam - which is a subjective measure of physicality that is independent from frequency response (i.e...
