Best-sounding open & closed headphones... with no EQ-ing or mods!

For closed back, I would say the AKG K371, as it was designed to match the Harman Target as closely as they could get it, which is a curve meant to be agreeable to a majority of listeners. For open back, probably the HD600/HD650/HD6XX, which despite being technically diffuse field, is nearly...

    AKG K361/K371

Alex Rowe is a great writer, and he should be trustworthy considering he has a background in audio production for some odd 15 years. I liked his review of the K371 and DT770, even though I’m not the biggest fan of the latter.

    Your favorite sub-$1,000 closed-back headphones?

Hard to find people with the EMU Ebony specifically. I got a pair recently too and they really are something special. Quite a bit better than the 177X which I’ve since sold. Too bad they’re not office friendly, but I got a pair of AKG K371 for the office (another surprisingly good closed back...

Looks awesome! I love the Focal aesthetic especially with the matching stands :)

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

Sure thing, thank you for reaching out!

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

Did anyone else's Sundara come with a cosmetic defect? I just opened mine and noticed the paint is quite a bit chipped on one of the ear cups. I'm not sure if this is normal or if it's something worth complaining about and asking for a replacement?

Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay H6 Discussion Thread

I think one of the Fostex/EMU/Denon headphones would be the next direct step.

If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

I still love my ER4XR. One of those headphones/earphones that you could live with as your only one if you needed to just because it does so little wrong. After 4 months of use I still was a little iffy about the fit and comfort of the triple flange tips. Some days they would feel totally fine...

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

Agreed, the Magni/Modi is the best you can get. Top tier measured performance and excellent build quality.

    AKG K361/K371

Think I’ve figured out what might be causing the issue. I don’t believe the headphones were shipped with two pads with different or differing amounts of material. Looking at the photos I noticed that one of the cups was touching the yoke while the other has a little space between the cup and the...

    AKG K361/K371

Thanks. Since I don’t believe this is affecting sound to my knowledge I’ll probably leave it as is to save the hassle. Unless, in your experience, having them symmetrical made a difference on your K553 By the way, are the pads on these easy to replace? They seem to be installed rather tightly...

    AKG K361/K371

I guess some photos may help. Am I crazy or does one look a little flatter than the other? I’m still not sure what’s causing it. I can’t imagine the foam in one of the pads decompressing so quickly.

    AKG K361/K371

I’ve just noticed that when these are on my head, the right earpad looks just a little more compressed compared to the left. When on my head, the left looks the same as it would when looking at the pad when they’re not on the head, while the right it’s just a little more squished looking but...

Are we going to talk about these new Beyer/Massdrop 177x?

I honestly can’t recommend these for $450, just too much for what they are. Even $380 was pushing it imo. I haven’t heard the Elegia but in terms of technical performance at least it should be better. Just keep in mind that it doesn’t come with a warranty, if I’m not mistaken.

    E-MU Wooden Series Headphones

Yeah, I'm not sure if this is true or not but I think the implementation of the drivers on the EMU headphones is just slightly more refined than the Fostex models. I've read in reviews that the Fostex Ebony could get a bit sibilant due to a very small peak in the treble but I don't hear anything...

    E-MU Wooden Series Headphones

That’s how they were sold lol! 😜 Really; I was interested in a Fostex Ebony in particular but they are so hard to come by these days. I would’ve considered the Teak if I found a used one for a good price and were at the point of giving up on finding a Fostex Ebony. I was checking the...

    E-MU Wooden Series Headphones

Had the Ebony ones for a few weeks now and these are the best headphones I've ever had the pleasure to listen to so far. They're just so warm and cozy but in a liquid smooth type of way that doesn't equal to muddy and bloated. Everything is quick and clean, great resolution in the bass, mids and...

    AKG K361/K371

Zeos is kind of difficult to take seriously these days. He hypes up almost every headphone he reviews, and it's in large part because he makes money off of the affiliate links on his videos. So he'll say it's good partly to get people to buy it so he makes money. An acclaimed reviewer like...

    AKG K361/K371

You could just EQ it, but if you rather not go that route (which I understand) then you might honestly be better off with IEMs if you’re after something that isolates. There just aren’t a lot of great options for closed backs even still unless you go up to ZMF level. They’re either too wonky in...

    AKG K361/K371

I’ve realized by this point that just about every headphone (especially closed back) has some flaws, but the K371 has probably among the least out of the closed backs I’ve tried which is pretty amazing considering the price. The only one that does better is the EMU Ebony for me but some don’t...

    Headphone Aesthetics, whats your favourite?

I love the look and design of Focals. The uniformity makes them all rather stunning; all looking nearly the same except for color, with the flagship Utopia setting itself apart with the “god tier” look. And that design as a whole is exquisite.
