AudioQuest NightOwl - A closed-back NightHawk
Saturday Audio Exchange in Chicago still has a few new and refurbished ones for sale, and they were going pretty cheap. Purchase price + shipping to somewhere in CONUS might be worth it, if somebody's having trouble finding one locally.- ssrock64

I'm getting back into the headphone hobby after a few years of absence, and made my first new purchases recently for a setup that I can easily bring between my home office and a coworking space. Currently enjoying the NightOwl Carbon driven from a discontinued TEAC HA-P50.- ssrock64

What Are You Listening To Right Now? -New thread, new rules. Please read them.
I haven't been active on Head-Fi in a few years, but I picked up the first new addition to my collection over the weekend and I'm easing back into the community. In that spirit, I'm also listening to a couple recent albums from artists that I used to listen to heavily, but haven't paid much... -

You'll hear a lot of different opinions on that. There are folks who hold onto a specific firmware version because of sound signature changes between iterations, but there are also those who adamantly maintain that there is difference at all between versions. I'm on the latest version, and I'm...- ssrock64

What Are You Listening To Right Now? -New thread, new rules. Please read them.
After knowing about them in my periphery for a few years, I finally dove into the catalog of Silver Apples recently. They were a late-'60s psychedelic pop group that relied upon early homebuilt synths instead of guitars to produce their signature sound. The duo's frontman, Simeon, designed an... -

Listening to the first two tracks that premiered last night from Bon Iver's upcoming third LP 22, A Million. While I was always enthralled by how perfectly Justin Vernon and his band (including backing musicians as accomplished as Colin Stetson and Greg Leisz) put together the complexities of... -
Chicago area headphone meet - August 13th 2016 - ChiUniFi
I hate to be a last-minute dropout, but the crazy rain we had today in the city didn't do great things to the carpets in my garden unit apartment. I'll catch you all at the next one!- ssrock64

A Concise View of Why The ATH-M50 is No Longer King
For the most part, no. The M50X is an updated model of the M50 with removable cables, other cosmetic modifications, and slight changes in tuning, but overall it sounds the same as the classic model.- ssrock64

I might actually be able to make this one; I'll update later on if I can confirm it. If it's not sold by then, I'll bring my T5p. I'll also have my DX80 with me if anybody's looking to try out a midrange DAP. I can probably dig up a few extension cords, as well.- ssrock64

Yesterday I went to the record store with the intent of filling some holes in my collection, browsing at random rather than checking inventory before going. I ended up happening across a few albums from artists who I paid attention to in years past, but who fell out of immediate thoughts more... -

I love the box! It's not often that an owner or series of owners cares enough about their gear to keep it with original packaging as it falls out of (and then back into) fashion.- ssrock64

An audiophile and petrolhead's journal: Buckle up!
Magick, I happened to pass through Knoxville on a recent road trip. The city has a whole lot more going for it than I assumed, and despite my passion for music, I think I would prefer Knoxville to Nashville as a place to live long term. I had lunch at some restaurant in Market Square, where I...- ssrock64

I recently took my DX80 on a long road trip to see how it fared in the hot sun under my windshield, playing through one of those weak little FM transmitters that you can buy for cars without a proper 1/8" input. Throughout the course of the trip, using 1.4.2, the only firmware issue I ran into...- ssrock64

That's an interesting idea. I think I remember something similar being done in the past, but I could be thinking of another aggregation from a different thread (like "What Are You Listening To Now?", etc.).- ssrock64
