flinkenick's 17 Flagship IEM Shootout Thread (and general high-end portable audio discussion)

Silicone IEMs use silicone tubing instead of PVC tubing of acrylic iems. This is because nothing can really bond/glue well to silicone, except silicone. Because the shell and tube materials are the same, a silicone iem can appear as if it didnt have tubing, just bores drilled into the material.

Basically what ForceMajeure said. If the driver inside is vented, do not cut as the dust can get into the holes. Use a small to medium size pliers. Put it over the ear canal part and carefully crush/break it, don't use much force it is very easy to crush that section (assuming it has more than...

Use Wax to make a negative mold of the impression. Then make more ear impressions into the negative wax mold. Note that you will need to drill a small hole to vent out the ear canal. Also dont use the foam stopper. For your final negative mold, if you want a long lasting one you need silicone...

Review: Spiral Ear SE 5-way Reference - A new level of resolution? (Review posted 5/15/12)

Out of my Mjolnir 2 balanced the SE5U definitely surpasses the lcd3f in imaging depth. I haven't heard the lcd3 pre fazor so I can't say for that. Being an iem vs open back headphone, you don't get the same open sound that you get with the LCDs on SE5U.

You don't. Not perfectly anyhow. You are right, speed of sound propagation is more or less the same regardless of frequency. The delay we are dealing with is due to the crossover. It's called phase shift. You cannot build a crossover without a capacitor. Capacitors take time to charge, and...

Review: Spiral Ear SE 5-way Reference - A new level of resolution? (Review posted 5/15/12)

Yea that's what I was describing a few posts up. It has like a shouty/megaphonic upper midrange.

Unhappy with a custom IEM fit. What are the options?

If you can wear it for an hour at a time you likely do not require a reshell, but rather a fit adjustment. Acrylic shells can be sanded and buffed to make minor adjustments in fit. I would contact JH regarding fit adjustment and tell them exactly where the pain is coming from. It will likely be...

Review: Spiral Ear SE 5-way Reference - A new level of resolution? (Review posted 5/15/12)

Note that my Zeus XIV is an Adel module version. They are both relatively neutral with slight mid forward sound signature. SE5U is a touch warmer. Both are pretty neutral in the mid bass and bass with SE5U having MUCH better extension down into the subbass along with the natural dynamic driver...

How does the egger resin compare to Dreve for you? Haven't used their resin yet only their lacquer.

Unlike the resin you make shells with, the lacquer is water (or some kind of acetone/alcohol) based and is susceptible to drying out. Bubbles occur when the viscosity of your lacquer increases. This is due to drying out of the water content. If you are brushing over areas that have begun to...

    LCD-3 New Cables?

Yes I will probably order a longer one too. But other than the moon audio silver dragon which is kind of ugly for the price range, everything else seems to be at many months of build time.

    LCD-3 New Cables?

Good thing is the connector isnt molded. So you can unscrew it and access the solder joints. Ordered a Furutech 4pin XLR and will be reterminating mine.

Lol so it's 64 drivers per side. Looks like it's just a joke to make fun of 64audio.

Noble Audio - the Wizard returns!

Yes cable upgrades will change the sound. Sometimes by more than just a little bit (whether it is because of the metals or it is specifically engineered to affect the sound by the cable maker is the debate) . But it doesn't necessarily change it for the better. If you are after more bass, the...

A trade in is not an "upgrade" in the literal sense. It does not work when you have custom made-to-order products.

Their new model is using different proprietary drivers. Letting you upgrade makes no sense. That's like saying you want to upgrade your iPhone 6 to an iPhone 7. Or upgrade last Gen car to newer model You don't do that. You sell the old and buy a new one.

Noble Audio - the Wizard returns!

Refit is generally an adjustment. So if you feel a certain area is loose they will coat it or build it up a little. So it usually doesnt involve new impressions. And I don't see why it would be restricted to one ear.    Before jumping to conclusions, test the seal. Use some kind of...

Don't use the microwave. It can't heat evenly and you may be overheating parts of it.   Put the krystalloid pieces in a pot, and suspend the pot into another one filled with water. And heat the water to the melting point of the krystalloid, monitor the temp with a thermometer.       For...

I think it is perfectly reasonable. Plussound audio is making an earplugs that will have a port hole you can plug/unplug. And it says it will accept both Adel and Apex modules.

Article: Please Stop "Burning In" Your Earphones

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but technically all drivers, crossovers, and even cables can "burn in" due to Electromigration?    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromigration
