You can see how the filter in the red is pushed towards one end. Vs the blue. Hope this helps. I also believe someone at Shure just followed the filter mods thread and copied the trishd mod (or whichever one this is like). I’d say they should’ve paid some royalties for their IP!- bigmistake68

To the trishd mod SOURCE! https://www.head-fi.org/threads/shure-se846-impressions-thread.675219/page-1209#post-13714040 I am not sure it sorts out the question entirely, but this is where it all began. Here is the search page from the beginning...- tbritton

Trishd mod: Blue - all blue filter foam pushed down to the damper end of the filter tube Just ordered a couple of blue filters to try this mod. The foam as new in each filter looks like it goes all the way down until where the tube gets bigger. Do they need to be pushed down beyond this point...- naynay

Guys if anyone has the red filter and the blue with the Trishd mod please tell as if they are identical or not. Also there is a user here that emulated the red filters using the blue ones so it might worth the try. Indogogo please enlighten us.- fablestruck

I understood it was the placement of 2 foam inserts at the far end of the filter tube, rather than having one foam piece at both ends.- beanoir78

I had the patience to change and change all this, and it was easier and faster for me to compare because I have two pairs of SE846. But my problem was that even on special audio files, my hearing or brain, after some time, refused to hear a small or significant difference :) I was just tired or...- indigogo

I am usually bored of meddling much with filters (did the TrishD mod once but then reverted to normal blue or black) but if you come up with a way to turn a blue into red then I'll try it.- fablestruck

...this very 'problem' ( I know this is not a 'problem' for many long term users and I completely respect that). If it came to be just a TrishD mod from my understanding when I tried that is that it affects the upper mids lower treble mostly. That does not address the upper treble extreme...- fablestruck

...squishing is easier than disassembling. As mentioned, disassembly is hard on that delicate seal, so I avoid it like the plague. I use the Trishd mod (pushing the blue filters all the way in and against the bottom cloth filter). So, there is little danger in my case of damaging the filter, as...- tbritton

...and just received them today nice and shiny-new and sparkling clear, with the blue filters already installed (which I instantly did the trishd mod to again!) and they came with the soft foam ear pieces, which I replaced with my silicone 3-tier ones. I agree. There are such well built iem and so comfortable to use. People tend to consider a particular iem to sound due to having more treble spark and extension. For me though, the most important factor is placment and the presentaiton. should i got for large or medium?- Fungus

I guess it would help if I actually read the review! Question answered. The foam is pushed down to the filter end because the reviewer was using a loaner set with the TrishD mod.- xSDMx

The TrishD mod was one of the first filter mods. The user TrishD had removed the foam, forgot whether it was at the top or bottom of the tube, put it all the way at the bottom, and found it sounded less dark that way. You can also make something in between by putting the foam partway down the...- Chupi383

That makes sense. My experience with equalizing these was with USB Audio Player Pro which I often use to stream Tidal. I did sometimes try to tamper with the treble but the results were underwhelming. Somehow the whole sound was dampening so to speak. But must be an issue with this player or...- fablestruck
