    Weird Sennheiser HD598/Marantz PM5005 mismatch.

Based on my fondness for an old pair of Sennheiser HD595s, which I was using with a Marantz PM5005 integrated, I decided to buy an HD598. First thing I noticed was an incredibly boomy mid-bass--almost unlistenable. This had me stumped, as it wasn't apparent at all with the 595. Finally I decided...

    Marantz PM-5005

Actually that's yet another question. I've had Marantz amps for many years (more than I care to count) and it's always been that the HP out is taken from the speaker taps. Yet Marantz speaks about the 5005 as if it had a separate HP amp: "PM5005 features a headphone amplifier that is able to...

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

True. There's definitely a far greater gap in price between top line and mids like 650 and 880 than in sound quality.     I actually think the 880 is underestimated. My phones are slightly modified in having a layer of flannalette placed in the cups (made a huge difference, no idea...

That sharp metal piece is only on the Premium, whereas I have the Pro. Besides, I only wear slip-on shoes.

How are the OPPO-PM3 compared to DT880 Pro?

Unfortunately for you, or perhaps fortunately, the DT880 punches far above its weight, so you'll have trouble substantially improving on it for much less than $1000. However, since you're unable to define the areas of improvement you're seeking, it's possible what I just said is complete nonsense.

Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO! 250 ohm, 32 ohm, or 80 ohms?

I think you may be disappointed. Though the 880 isn't a completely open can (or so Beyer tell us, though they never were an accurate source of info about their own cans) there's nothing about the sound to suggest it's anything other than completely open.

I hope she was aware of that before you posted it here, for all the world to see.

Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO! 250 ohm, 32 ohm, or 80 ohms?

Hmm. That's a claim I wouldn't second if I were you, especially on your first post.

Yes, this is a common problem. Set everything to flat and you feel you've lost the special magic these cans provide. I think the least you do to them the better. Cut the treble less than you think you need to. You'll be surprised how quickly you get used to a little extra sparkle.

Talking of loose sliders, on one of my sets (I have two Pros) the sliders went totally loose after a couple of years. I had to drill through and put small screws in to keep them in place. There's definitely a weakness there in all models, and Beyer really should have addressed it by now.

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

Is it true the 880 is semi-open? Its sound is that of a fully open headphones, and it leaks sound as much as a fully open headphone. If the only source of info on that is Beyer themselves, I wouldn't trust them as their informational literature is notoriously sloppy. Has anyone actually...

    The Entry Level Stax Thread

As stated in one of my posts, I owned both Lambda and Sigma (normal bias) for many years. At the time I found the Lambda a little bright, so would probably enjoy it now. However, I've moved on, and though it might sound like sacrilege to some, the 880 is what I've moved on to. I'm quite...

Actually I'd have thought that was excess treble. I was thinking of extreme as in:   3. farthest from the center or middle; outermost; endmost: the extreme limits of a town.

    The Entry Level Stax Thread

I appreciate that a broader range of music will give a broader subjective perspective. However, I'm not interested in music outside the stated genre, will never listen to it and thus, for me, it's entirely irrelevant to my headphone experience. (I also happen to think that heavy orchestral...

    The Entry Level Stax Thread

I had the 207 and found the treble too reticent, especially after a Beyer DT880. Actually I didn't find the sound any better than the 880 overall, which surprised me. Always wondered how much better the higher numbered Stax might be.

Yes, I have an unopened pair of new pads, and I would expect a diminution (love that word) of treble from the foam filter. However, what I described is not just that. I spent much of last evening playing familiar material just to confirm that I'm not hallucinating, and indeed the improvement...

Mid-fi cans well suited for classical music and good mids/trebel (HE-400i versus Oppo PM-3)

Is the 400i actually an 'up'? I'm not sure. I chose my DT880 Pro after long comparision with an HE-500. After I'd sold the 500 I had a chance to buy another at an irresistable price and did another long comparison with the 880. Again I chose the 880. The beyer just seemed much more open and...

Mid-fi cans well suited for classical music and good mids/trebel (HE-400i versus Oppo PM-3)

I can second DT880 for classical. Should be used with warm amp or good integrated with tone controls. Nad are a good match.
