CEntrance Ampersand balanced portable headphone amplifier

I posted the case I use in the HiFiM8 V2 thread, and I have two for my M8 V2 and Ampersand. The elastic band is starting to stretch out and loosen though - it still works unless I try to put something much smaller in the case and then it's too loose. I'm going to look for something that can hold...

CEntrance Ampersand balanced portable headphone amplifier

I don’t use my desktop DAC and amps much either. I just tend to carry my BlueDAC or my HiFiM8 V2 around the house with me to where it is needed. I was more often using my MacBook laptop than I was a using desktop computer, but last summer I built a gaming PC and I keep my HiFiM8 V1 connected...

I think you meant to respond to ChrisLN, as I was saying something very similar.

Yes, those LEDs are definitely very helpful in tuning the input level that we feed it, so that we don’t overdrive the input. I find that it can accept fairly high input levels before the meters go red and you hear distortion.

So, it seems that I don't have any headphones that this Ampersand cannot drive well, with more than enough power for even the Original HiFiMan HE-6. However, as a "wire with gain" it sounds just like whatever source I use. So, if you pick the wrong source then the ampersand can sound as bright...

    Review - Audioengine D2 Wireless Hi-Res USB/Optical SPDIF DAC & Transport

D2 with Wi-Fi has lossless transmission for hi-res music. But AAC, and even apt-x HD, are lossy transmission codecs. I believe that there is still some form of conversion of the audio into the apt-x codec, But a USB receiver chip sending signal to the DAC is not converting the ones and zeros...

I had to go out of town for a few days, and should be back home tomorrow night, and then I can finish trying all those other headphones I mentioned with the Ampersand. I really don’t expect to find any surprises.

So I’m pretty sure that I have a dual 3-pin to four pin adapter, but I would need gender changers, because it lets me plug a headphone cable with dual 3-pins into a 4-pin headphone amp.

I certainly will not forget all the late night sessions we spent chatting on the phone and in messenger, to make sure that this product was perfect when completed. I have to tell you it’s a job well done and I can’t think of any way to make it better. Well, except maybe if it also had tone...

So I caught a typo in what you quoted from me that I’m not gonna go back and fix. But I also caught where I mistakenly said dual 3-pin into single 4-pin, and I actually meant to say dual 3-pin into 4.4 mm male, which is the input into the Ampersand. I have adapters to let me use 4-pin XLR...

CEntrance Ampersand balanced portable headphone amplifier

I would like to add that the sound signature does not seem to change, to my ears, when switching between high gain, medium gain, or low gain. I have experienced sonic changes with some amps in the past when changing to a different gain level, but not this one. The only amp to come to mind right...

I just received a sample of the Ampersand today. I and my son HeadFanatic are both extremely impressed with it! All of our listening today was via the 4.4mm and 4-pin balanced outputs. I listened to an Alpha version last year and prefer to forget about that one, LOL. I’m using it with a...

    The CEntrance Hi-Fi M8 V2 Thread

Nice - my 4-part review is buried in this thread somewhere, and it was compiled and republished at https://www.headpie.net/2020/06/centrance-hifi-m8v2-detailed.html as one long rambling review. One of my favorite quotes, "The M8 V2 balanced amp section with the Roxanne simply blew me away the...

Review of the NuPrime Audio Hi-mDAC portable USB DAC/amp for computer and mobile devices

I've found that the W60 need an amp a bit more than the W80. But un-amped the W60 are just a bit more neutral, flat, and unremarkable than the W80. The W60 and W80 both scale up greatly with an amp. So, I agree that you need an amp to wake up the W60. I feel the same way about the W40. For some...

    The CEntrance Hi-Fi M8 V2 Thread

Here is another tidbit of information. The manufacturer states that the USB port on the cold side can actually charge the battery very slightly faster because it’s closer in the circuit to the battery than the USB port on the hot side, as long as the charge switch set set to “on”.

    The CEntrance Hi-Fi M8 V2 Thread

With your IEM you need to turn stamina mode ON, not off. Stamina mode ON makes it last longer, more stamina, by turning off the hot-side high-power amps (and also turns off the LED meters). You should be able to keep the battery topped off by plugging in the battery pack to the USB charge port...

I have that 4-pin to 2.5mm adapter and it works fine with my HD-6XX on the mass drop 2.5mm TRRS cable, with both the M8 V2 and the Cavalli Liquid Carbon. The $40 2.5mm drop cable is not bad either. With the same cable the HD600 are better on the M8 V2 than the 6XX, more of an issue with...

    The CEntrance Hi-Fi M8 V2 Thread

That’s a tough one. I’d like you to stick with 2.5 mm TRRS for balanced IEM if you can. The IEM cables are light and not quite as well suited for a heavier 4.4 mm Pentacon plug. Typically you won’t see a lot of full-size headphones needing high power if they have a 2.5 mm plug. HOWEVER...

I was thinking at the time that pre-orders started that 4.4 mm Pentacon was going to be replacing 4-pin XLR in the future, and it seems to be going that way. If you had 4.4mm instead of 4-pin I would have had to buy a 4.4 mm male Pentacon to 4-pin female XLR, for use with my legacy headphones...

LoL, I begged and begged for Pentacon connector, but I’m making things work with adapters. It’s good to know it may have a future with you. My Moon-Audio Silver-Dragon 4-pin male to 4.4mm female adapter is pretty transparent and doesn’t affect the sound, but not everyone wants to spend $150 on...

It might be more about the efficiency than the impedance. My Edition-X are incredibly easy to drive, like an IEM. My hi-fi man HE-560 are low impedance but they’re also low sensitivity compared to my Edition X V2. Some low impedance headphones need more current to sound proper than others, and...

    The CEntrance Hi-Fi M8 V2 Thread

We got a Newfantasia HiFiMan Edition-X V2 cable from Amazon, with 2.5mm balanced and dual 2.5mm plugs, and the Hi-Fi M8 V2 does a fantastic job driving the Edition-X V2 from the 2.5mm balanced output. BTW, the older smaller BlueDAC also does an incredible job with this cable to drive the...
