That would be truly weird, balanced is pretty much guaranteed 2x OI from single ended, dual amps for balanced.. unless it has a really unique topology but in a device of this price class..?

You can undo all the dampening no prob. The only difficult part is foam around the baffle cage, I don't think it you can put it back easily; would be a royal pain.. I don't recommend reversing the mod though, in any case. The effect is really subtle, anyway.

In theory there really should not be such a change in frequency response between M1 and M2 that you could EQ one to the other. That would be shocking. A DAC should still output flat....

The D70s is one ultra smooth DAC if that's what you look for. Not ultra high resolving but ultra smooth. The Gustard X16 is one of the best sounding sabre DACs imo but I have never heard SU-9, might be close. Get a Topping D70s, used or new if you find it.
