Not to mention those extra hunks of steel to make Beats feel more "substantial" and less like plastic and glue

On your budget if you don't mind an open-back design, Grado has a few sets under $200 (SR80e (awesome entry level open cans) , SR125e and SR225e) that are all going to be exceptionally clear with a wide soundstage--but not everbody finds the design comfortable for long-term listening. Grados...

The new one's big sell is that it has modular drivers (and pads/headbands) so it seems like they are trying to offer some choices to make up for the first edition's shortcomings.
