I know this thread is old, but for anyone in the future reading this I've found the HD 800, O2+ODAC and a little bit of EQ to be the best setup.  Bring the bass up and tone down 6.5 and 9kHz.

Here's mine. HD 800's seem to have been flatter in the past.

Yep, O2/ODAC is great value. I would go for 1x/3.3x makes it flexible. I know that ODAC is plug n play for a PC, you just need to set it to 24 bit/96 kHz in settings.

You're referring the to the dip switches on the back right?

Can recommend the AKG K712. Has quite a low clamping force (and bigger earcups than the HE-400i btw).

The HE-400i clamping force was a little high for me. Just mentioning, otherwise great sound.

The DAC chip is important, but the PCB design is importanter.

A FiiO E10K should also be just fine.

Used an Epiphany Acoustics EHP-02i with my HE-400i when I owned the pair. Worked just fine.
