Surely an amps purpose IS only to make it louder...?
Like i said, it was simplified considerably! thanks for clarifying for the OP though! I do also want to point out that like Me x3 is saying damping factor is not that important to the sound in many cases. it is purely a measurement of the amplifier's control over the driver. Mechanical damping...- TadCat

Looking for bassy headphones up to £200
x2 on both, considerably more refined sounding than similarly priced & tuned headphones. The M-100s are built like a tank, mine have lasted ~5 years so far and still going with no issue. The M50x is definitely more neutral sounding (still v shaped) than the v-modas, but i can't comment much on...- TadCat

Surely an amps purpose IS only to make it louder...?
A dedicated headphone amp will typically have a lower output impedance than your phone or most mobile devices not specifically made for sound. This decrease in output impedance will provide a higher damping factor given a constant load impedance (the headphones). Damping factor is referenced...- TadCat

Diminishing Returns
My personal opinion is that in general, going much above $500 on a set of headphones is where it starts to be purely preference. What i mean, for example (purely speculative), is that while the $3000 Hifiman HE1000 will probably measure better than the HE560 all around, the improvements will...- TadCat

~$600 Closed Over ear with Neutral Sound & Good Build
below budget is always welcome i'll look into it, i liked the balance of the audio technica m70x, so if it has a similar sound that might be good for me! the m70x just didn't quite fit right to get a good seal for me and the build felt a little flimsy.- TadCat

~$600 Closed Over ear with Neutral Sound & Good Build
Almost exactly my thought process. I only have reservations because some people seem to be pretty hard on the treble of the el-8, its hard to tell if this is the fans of the audeze lcd-2/3 (both of which i'm certain i would not like) or people with tastes similar to mine. Also, razordogaudio...- TadCat

Reply to review by 'tadcat' on item 'Sennheiser HD 800 Headphones'
I've never heard these headphones so i can't comment on that, but as i was reading your review i felt the urge to point out that neutral bass is surprisingly little for some people. And also that the vast majority of music, with real recorded instruments, does not go near 30hz. So unless people...- TadCat

~$600 Closed Over ear with Neutral Sound & Good Build
sorry, I forgot to mention these will be for use around my university campus, so i'd prefer closed back because it's noisy and i don't want to bother everyone. And yes, the DAC/Amp will be a leckerton uha-6s mkii. I've never heard the he560, but from what i've read that is almost certainly the...- TadCat

~$600 Closed Over ear with Neutral Sound & Good Build
Hello! I think the title says most of it, but i'm looking for closed over ear headphones at about $600 (no more than $700) and need a bit of help finding some with Neutral sound signatures. I've been reading around quite a bit and it just seems like everything has a warmer sound, which i don't...- TadCat

New Member Introductions thread
Hello, all! I am from San Antonio, Texas and I am an audio addict. I've been involved in car audio for about 5 years, have been building speaker for myself and some friends for about 3, and just recently decided to get more involved with personal audio. I've got some experience with what would...- TadCat

Final Audio Designs Sonorous IV vs Sonorous VI
Hello, this is my first head-fi post, but i've been a long time reader. Anyway, I'm considering buying some Final Audio Designs over ears and am really interested in the balanced armature ones, but haven't been able to find much on the sonorous iv. I haven't heard anything but great reviews and...- TadCat
