From what I've heard, Audio Technica improved the earpads and headband and made them more comfortable.

I haven't tried the dt770 but I recently ordered the m50x in blue/tan and should be receiving it this week.

I only had the mdr-1r for a few a few days but I can definitely say that the mdr-1a has better clarity and a tighter bass response. The mdr-1r has significantly gone down in price though, so whether the clarity is worth the higher price is up to you. All I can say is that I enjoyed both pairs.
