Unlike many players I've used, this Sony is very particular about cards. None of my pre-loaded cards would work (all of which worked on multiple other players). My solution was to format fat 32 and let the Sony, when tethered, populate the card. a PITA, but that' what worked...

Yes. I liked it as a preamp - it was quiet and had plenty of gain for line-level sources. The primary limitation is that it only has one single-ended RCA output, so for a system with mains and a sub you may need to use splitters.

First question - There is very little down-pressure on the top pad with this stand. If you use the headphones as often as I do (and most owners will) it won't spend an extended time in any one position due to usage. Also, I'm using a Kimber Kable which has longer barrels than the Sony stock...
