"Millett Hybrid" redux: NuHybrid headphone amp, using the Korg Nutube

I replaced a few parts as described above and voila, my Nuhybrid was in business. I built mostly with the recommended parts, except the capacitors and the pot (TKD). The input 0.1ufs are ClarityCap SA, which are not that expensive ($4 each) but a very clear upgrade over Wimas. For the power...

"Millett Hybrid" redux: NuHybrid headphone amp, using the Korg Nutube

My 470uf electrolytics are socketed and they test fine. I think I’ll replace the choke, and the following 10uf and diode. Everything beyond the diode was likely protected from negative voltage, right? It’s always humbling to remember that despite a fair amount of experience, you can still make...

"Millett Hybrid" redux: NuHybrid headphone amp, using the Korg Nutube

I built the NuHybrid, fully populated the board. Plugged my adapter in, turned it on. The choke started smoking. I turned it off quickly. Wondering what the hell went wrong, I double checked polarities of everything, solder joints, etc. and it all looked fine. Turns out...I was using the...

"Millett Hybrid" redux: NuHybrid headphone amp, using the Korg Nutube

I'm about to pull the trigger on this project and have just a few questions. C3, C5, C6, C11 are designated 470uf 35v. Would 680uf 35v be okay in any of these positions? Like many around here I like the Dale RN55 resistors. Some of the values for this project are only available in the 1/5 watt...

In ears on the BRIGHT side

Thanks. You're right, I would never have even considered Monster headphones. But I will look into these, as there is a Walmart relatively close to me and as you say it's very easy to return there.

In ears on the BRIGHT side

I tried the HF5..the ER4 is $100 beyond my budget. The HF5's are impressively detailed, I just didn't care for the sound signature; I also tried the Westone UM Pro 1, and it was the same story. All these models only go up to 16khz, and my ears really don't like this.

In ears on the BRIGHT side

Looking for in-ears that are not bass-enhanced, but closer to the opposite: mid/treble specialists (and hopefully the bass, if not great in quantity, still sounds good). Don't want to spend more than $200. (So, don't tell me to spend $300, please)   In the spirit of transparency, this is a...

    Havi b3 pro 1 thread 2.0

I bought the B3 because I was looking for a neutral IEM that didn't cost too much, and on that front they deliver. They sound good.   But two pairs have broken for me. In the first, the right earpiece died. Mp4nation was responsive and sent a new pair quickly; however, this one just died...

Best neutral iem under 150 dollars for 2015?

Slightly old thread but I have to say something about the Havi B3. They sound pretty good, and are very neutral, but I had two of them break within 6 months. The first one failed in the right earpiece after a few months, where the wire enters - I had to hold the wire in a certain position for it...

In-ears that sound like AKG K701 or Q701

Thanks for the Sony recommendation. As for Etymotic ER4-P, it's just too much money and it ain't gonna happen.   But, what do you think about the cheaper Etymotics -- do they tend to have a similarly neutral sound signature? I would tend to assume the cheaper ones like HF5 are similar, but...

In-ears that sound like AKG K701 or Q701

Yes that's me. Still rocking the Millett Max too!   True, but not all IEM's offer such total isolation as Etymotics apparently do. I was hoping there was something of a similar sound signature that actually lets in a little noise.   Maybe I should just be asking for lean-bass IEM...

In-ears that sound like AKG K701 or Q701

Thanks. The reason I've avoided Etymotics is people say the isolation is so strong, they're not safe for walking or jogging. And that would be my main use for them (commuting by train/foot in Chicago).   Are there any others in the same ballpark?

In-ears that sound like AKG K701 or Q701

I have owned both the AKG K701 and Q701 headphones. The K701 sounded extremely neutral to me, while the Q701 was similar but with the low end slightly beefed-up. I like neutral. What many others seem to call "bass-lite," I call accurate. I don't mind a touch of bass enhancement, like the Q701...

    BASS SHOCK: Am I crazy???!

The Bang and Olufsen BeoPlay H3's arrived today. They are quite good. Still too much bass and warmth, but not in a flabby resonant way like most of the others. A mild treble boost was enough to balance them out for me.They have excellent detail and placement, though not nearly as much depth...
