The Bottlehead S.E.X. amp is also a great contender (not to take anything away from any of the other suggestions).

Some of the Thinkpad docks have coax SPDIF out ports. Good luck with USB -- I had a heck of a time with it when I was on Thinkpads with USB -- lots of stuttering and drops. With luck the more sophisticated reclocking, etc., on the y2 will work much better for you when connected to the TP via USB.

I'll let others respond to the audio characteristics of short runs of different purities of copper, etc. To me, the advantages of decent-quality teflon-coated wire are: * Good build quality of the wire that makes it consistent and reliable and easy to work with * Teflon doesn't shrink back...

Another approach might be a PCMCIA firewire card -> one of the firewire sound "cards" folks like so much. Just a thought. I have such a card if you want to pursue that approach...

If you're just a little persistent and indeed if you look locally you shouldn't have too much trouble finding 19J6 tubes, which are the only practical choice for the SSMH amp. Beezar.com has a kit that comes with tubes, if you're OK working with a PCB rather than point-to-point.
