Could be a potential problem with the most up-to-date version of Rockbox that you're trying to install. If there is an earlier version (alas havn't used my X5 in many a month) try installing that; i had very few problems with Rockbox when i did use it.

The laptop i'll be taking will be functional to the extent of having msword, since i hopefully intend to take my desktop with me (it's fairly new, so can't really justify replacing it with a laptop), so an internal DAC probably wouldn't be too great. Hmmm, hadn't really thought of the HD650s...

I'm in agreeance with Xhristmas; the current Zune is a very good player, and microsoft seem like they wish to keep it supported which is always a good thing. I say go for it really, you won't be disappointed.

Well the Zune is available via Ebay, which is how i got mine in the end (its just a thought)

If the Ipod has been crossed of, then i'd suggest either the Iaudio X5 or the Zune, both of which have a sound i've throughly enjoyed using my E500s (the Zune perhaps edging it as being the more musical of the two players)

The X-fi are designed to be better for music. Basically depends on whether your laptop has an Express slot or PCMIA(X-Fi is Express, Audigy 2 ZS is PCMIA).

Since i spotted the word compatibility before typing Zune, i'd say an Iaudio X5L. You'll get 30gigs of space, huge battery life, one of the best sounding players around, and support for pretty much all music formats (Flac if you want it). The Zunes a great player, but currently your limited...

I'd go with the Zune personally. Just received mine yesterday and it's quickly replaced my Iaudio X5. It's easy to use and sounds fantastic. As for whether the hard-drive will fail, can't really tell you that, but thats probably an issue with all MP3 players.

Only solution i can suggest then is spending the time to sort them out. Unless you have a mind numbingly large music collection then it shouldn't take too long if you use something like iTunes. Sadly it was what i had to do, because i'd not use ID tags before i got my Zune, and my music...
