    best solder

Any eutectic Pb/Sn 37/63 solder with rosin core is all you need. Ersin and Kester come to mind although I don't know if Ersin is mfgd any more. IMO, anything else more exotic/expensive is audio snakeoil wrt sonic or electrical performance.

    Comparison of MP3 player audio

Quote: WoW! I'm no audio expert but does this mean that the Shuffle works best? What Machrone is basically saying is that the audio output stage - where the rubber meets the road, so to speak - of the Shuffle does a superior job of delivering - to the headphones - the most faithful...

    Comparison of MP3 player audio

The April 12 2005 edition of PC Magazine has an interesting article by Bill Machrone where he compares the audio performance of the Ipod Shuffle, Mini and 3g along with the Dell DJ20 and Creative Zen Micro. He ran a number of tests including a square wave response and found that the Ipod...

Please tell us your heat sinking techniques

Pre-tin each connection to be soldered, then do final assembly. Now you need only enough heat to melt the solder instead of heating up both component parts, plus the solder.

    ppa: most valuable upgrades

Quote: 24v elpac regulated a good psu? i have that on my pimeta. i assume it would work well with the ppa untill i decide to build a dedicated one. I have no experience with this PS but as long as it provides sufficient current it should be fine.

    ppa: most valuable upgrades

IMO, the most cost effective 'options' are to max out the buffer configuration and the power rail isolation JFETs (Q3). These have far more effect on the quality of the output signal than exotic wiring, shiny knobs, flashy LEDs, sexy cases etc. You can get by with a modest power supply -...

why does desoldering braid work like crap?

If you have a small board that you can pick up, heat up the offending hole and rap it gently on a piece of cardboard. The mechanical shock will generally cause the liquid solder to clear the hole (check for stray solder; if you have a very tight board with a lot of traces, you may want to pass...

    Power supply for PPA

Quote: If I'm not understanding wrong, are you saying that I could probably save a few power reservoir capacitors (C1) in PPA Regardless of the quality of the Acopian, you should build your PPA with the recommended rail capacitance. Some folks really like to load up on capacitance...

    Power supply for PPA

The Acopian is really overkill for the PPA if you build it with the full complement of rail splitters and capacitors. This is where the real work of power regulation and filtering take place and IMO you should not skimp. As long as the power supply can produce a regulated voltage with...
