Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
Ah, yes, I see that now, thank you! Luckily I hadn't clicked the checkout button yet. As I read the descriptions on these different capacitor series, I wonder if the difference between the KW series and FG series would be noticeable. The description certainly makes it seem like I would get "a...- RanDiesel

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
So the capacitor I was using in there was a FG series one just like the one you have in your striked out post. I will just order the same one again this time from Mouser, since I really don't want to completely dismantle my amp to replace both caps to the 50v versions. As you can see in...- RanDiesel

Actually, that specific voltage is difficult to find. Do you think a 50v version would work? Found this one: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Nichicon/UKZ1H471MHM/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMtZ1n0r9vR22e0BBN1kF1oiS%252b9HFuzN1rI%3d- RanDiesel

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
It was an ebay store front and not a random guy, and at the time Mouser didn't have the nichicon caps I wanted. The enclosure is the standard one in the BOM for the 12AU7 build. There are no air holes besides the ones that the mosfets poke thru to the heat sinks. I suppose I could add air...- RanDiesel

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
I built the SSMH 12AU7 version about 2 years ago and have been using it happily until recently I noticed that the left channel was really quiet compared to the right channel. So I cracked it open and found a bloated capacitor, C5 (63v 470uF) to be specific. I am wondering if this is just bad...- RanDiesel

Another Millett Starving Student Build
Nice work with the circuit layout, I am on an almost identical journey. I even ordered the same incorrect resistor but I just reordered from mouser and desoldered the 220k one. I wish I had ordered a little bit larger enclosure, but i just ordered the one on the BOM and was having a hard time...- RanDiesel

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
Thanks for the info, I am going to go ahead and finish the other channel and put it all together. I will post pics when it is done. I have seen several posts about putting a delay in the circuit so that you don't have to unplug your headphones before turning it off and on, but I haven't...- RanDiesel

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
Hi, I have been working on a SSMH for a couple weeks now and have finished the case work and starting working on the circuit. But I have never built a circuit like this before and in fact this is the my first time even soldering. I was having a hard time laying out the resistors and capacitors...- RanDiesel

Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!
Quote: It was definitely scary, but I applied the rastapants mods in three phases and didn't really feel like it was making all that significant of a difference, until i scraped the white felt off and replaced it with craft felt. The bass was bloated at first and the vocals seemed...- RanDiesel

Quote: I have some craft felt over the driver and it definetly helped, plus on top of that is the fabric from the shure 840 pads. The felt of the driver on the ear side mod is going to have a vastly different affect based on your other mods. I didn't feel i need the felt over the driver...- RanDiesel

Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!
I got my Maverick Audio D1 last week and must say that I have been absolutely loving my T50s with this DAC. I applied the rastapants recipe to mine and they are pretty close to perfect to my ears, and I love how I was able to tune the bass by covering 50% of the ports with electrical tape. I was...- RanDiesel

Quote: Thanks for the response dBel. I have been researching the TPs for some time and actually ordered the T50rps with the smeggy recipe in mind, then I saw this thread. I can only hope to get close to the smeggy TP sound but I was hoping to hear that the effort of turning these cups...- RanDiesel

Quote: I just ordered some Cocobolo wood blocks and I am going to turn some cups and try my hand at making some Thunderpants. But I am still wondering if anyone has done a comparision of the modded T50s and the Thunderpants?- RanDiesel

Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!
Quote: Interesting, this makes a lot of sense. So what was the original intention of the white damping in the stock T50s? Increased driver back-pressure is going to limit the drivers travel and low frequency response, right? The stock version was totally bass anemic, but I suppose it is...- RanDiesel

Has anyone done a comparison of the modded T50RPs to the Thunderpants? I am so impressed with the sound I am getting from these headphones I am considering ordering some wood and turning some cups. I am also waiting for my Maverick D1 to ship so I can really see what these babies can do.- RanDiesel
