I actually prefer USB-B ports for desktop / non-portable devices. They're sturdier than USB-C, have fewer and larger connection pins. In case of eventual failure they're also easy to replace with minimal soldering skills. They've been used for printers for ages and I've never seen one fail.

Mine drops abruptly to complete silence and then comes back up gradually (in 2-3 seconds or so). For mobile devices there are also these sort of adapters (attached) which allow you to use any existing usb-c cable. Tested on mine.

The chip responsible for handling the volume input is the UM800x which can only be updated via UART. I assume the XMOS chip is responsible for the light ring, in which case can be done via USB. Haven't had this issue myself (at least not yet) but this is pretty bad if confirmed by multiple...
