thanks for the advice, downgraded to firmware 2.7, seems to fix the freezing issues. and my usb connection seems to be more stable too (on 3.3 it sometimes locks up during the USB Connected screen). Is it just me or the boot up time of the player seems to be faster in 2.7 instead of 3.3 ...

not too sure about the rest of the players you stated, but the M7 seems to be quite a brick especially if you want to wear it like a necklace, and I don't see any clip/loop points on the M7 or the included TPU case either. maybe the Hiby R2 or Fiio M5 will a better option (square and small)...
