Nope, the hm700 works both single ended and in balanced mode. I just want to add my two cents regarding this player- The UI can be a little sluggish. It can get a little slow when it comes to the scanning of songs. The device may also lag quite a while if you have a huge library of songs. So...

You could view post 168 or page 12 of this thread to see how you can identify the differences between both versions. I'm not too sure if that is still a valid method to gauge, so do not take my word for it. I sent my v1 sm64 in for channel imbalance recently and I just received the v2 back...
