STAX SRM-D50
Nice catch, but I believe this is a Stax-owned website. So far I've only seen a couple of online resellers with updated pictures and descriptions, and it seems they got the info from this forum, not from Stax. Even the reseller who sold me the ‘dark grey’ unit hasn't updated their website yet...- newbluesuit

STAX SRM-D50
@purk @SolarCetacean The ‘dark silver’ D50 is indeed not intended as a revision. Stax did not even bother to inform their distributors and resellers that they had changed the color (and made small design adjustments). Maybe there will be an ‘SRM-D50 II’ down the line, but for now the specs and...- newbluesuit

STAX SRM-D50
Indeed: - older = pre-2023 = silver = no vents on the back (bought second-hand this month) - current/newer = post-2022 = ‘dark silver’ = vents on the back (bought new in January) And @purk, yes, the ‘dark silver’ one does sound a bit darker than the silver one…- newbluesuit

The Stax Thread III
For those of you who may be interested, I have just posted a thorough side-by-side comparison (with pictures) of an older silver SRM-D50 and a current ‘dark silver’ SRM-D50 in the thread dedicated to that energizer: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/stax-srm-d50.892028/post-18658563- newbluesuit

STAX SRM-D50
So I finally found a second-hand silver 230V SRM-D50 from 2022. It came in its original box with all the original manuals and accessories. Before listing my 2024 ‘dark silver’ unit for sale, I thought I should do a thorough comparison of the two side by side. Visually, all the parts that are...- newbluesuit

It looks like this reseller has an ‘Easter sale’ going on, with very aggressive discounts indeed. It's not just for Stax: many other brands are included in the sale, with models such as the LCD-5 and HD 800 S at unusually low prices. Some PMC speakers are listed at half price! I can't see any...- newbluesuit

I would say that the energizer part of the D50 is very neutral, definitely not cold. The DAC part as I said is not that good, and rather on the lean side, so it's better to bypass it and use an external DAC instead.- newbluesuit

STAX SRM-D50
@babyoh If the info on this page is correct (and I can't see why it wouldn't be), the HEV 70 (the energizer that was sold with the HE 60) also has a maximum output of 400 V: https://www.stereophile.com/content/sennheiser-he-60-headphones-specifications. So with the proper adapter it seems the...- newbluesuit

STAX SRM-D50
@babyoh Looking around this forum and elsewhere on the web, I see several people happily running the HE 60 off of other Stax energizers with similar maximum outputs (ranging from 300 to 450 V). As far as I can tell, the only Stax energizer that is currently in production and has a significantly...- newbluesuit

@SolarCetacean The 009s out of the Jr energizer had a bit of harshness in the treble but the usual ‘body’ and bass extension were present. The Jr headphones out of the same energizer had significantly less body and bass extension, and the treble was harsher than the 009. The pads on the Jr did...- newbluesuit

Today I got to compare the Warwick Bravura, the Audeze CRBN2, and the Stax SR-009s, and then at a different store the Hifiman Shangri-La Jr and (again) the Stax SR-009s. The Bravura was obviously powered by the matching Warwick Sonoma energizer (with its embedded DSP and DAC). In the first...- newbluesuit

Well, I did say that the SR-009s was clearly superior to the HD 800 S for percussion. But I don't think that has much to do with bass response. Attack is typically made of higher frequencies. I have just ordered an HD 800 and look forward to checking if it beats the HD 800 S in this respect (I...- newbluesuit

The HD 800 S does not have the bass extension of the SR-009s but its bass is clean and controlled. I wouldn't call it ‘poor’ in quality, even in comparison with the Stax. The bass extension of the Stax ‘speakers’ is their most impressive feature, I think. As a result of it they never sound...- newbluesuit

The Stax Thread III
For what it's worth, I dug up my notes from my Stax listening session in a showroom a couple of years back. I tried the SR-X9000, the SR-009s, and the SR-007 MK II together with the SRM-T8000 and SRM-700T drivers. They had less expensive models as well, but I chose to focus on these...- newbluesuit

Thanks a lot for this! I'll give cs@staxheadphones.com a few more days, and if I don't get a reply I'll try enquiry@staxheadphones.com. It seems fairly obvious that your queries to Stax, as well as those from the reseller who sent me the ‘dark grey’ unit, together with the posts on this forum...- newbluesuit
