Actually there IS a program like ASIO in Linux. Its called Jack. It brings the latency down to ASIO levels. I highly advise you get it working. It has trouble working with amarok, so I would suggest going with Audacious or Juk

Computers have an incredible amount of interference in them sometimes, and to me it wasn;t very obvious until I did an A/B test. Get a 2nd source, even if its a cheap dvd player, and compare it to the sound of the headphone out jack. I think you will be in for a shock.

Why are you getting a high price sound card if you aren't playing games? Why not get an external dac?

If you are looking for a dac in that price range you might want to use the Headroom Ultra Microdac. It does 24/192 upsampling using an AD1896 to the dac (CS4398). It has inputs for optical and coax, and usb and is in a nice looking small form factor. It hasn't been reviewed much, as it came out...
