How much SQ is there to gain? Laptop as source

I'm afraid you're in the same boat as I am. No Indigo DJ for you.

How much SQ is there to gain? Laptop as source

Expresscard != cardbus The indigo DJ is cardbus, not expresscard. Be careful or you'll end up with an expensive paperweight. USB might be your best upgrade path. I think the expresscard choices right now are limited to a pseudo x-fi or extremely expensive stuff.

    MIA MIDI vs 0202 USB

Another thing making the comparison odd is that the Mia MIDI is balanced while the 0202 is not. The Mia MIDI also doesn't have a headphone amp built in. If you're looking for something that you can plug a normal pair of headphones straight into, I don't think the Mia MIDI is what you want.

Closed and circumaural phone for outdoor use...

Already having purchased a pair of AKG-701s since sign up, I find myself in the market for another pair of phones with a slightly different purpose. I still use my old "pre head-fi" sony headphones for walking outside, and I'd like to finally be able to retire them completely. It gets damned...

    Popping sounds when typing

And that is why I don't use envy 24 based cards. I'm guessing you have a sata hard drive and a SiImage 3112/3114 on board chipset? I've got an asus a7n8x-e deluxe motherboard and had to return an m-audio audiophile 2496 card because of similar issues. For added fun, run defrag and tell it...

The cheapest audio-boost for laptops ! (with geeky pictures!)

Umm, that thing really has poor specs. Datasheet shows an F3 of 100Hz (!) when using 220uF caps. And the THD figures are abysmal. Time for a mod... replace those 220uF caps with 1000uF caps and see if you get your bass back.

    are headphones cables shielded?

Are any headphones really sensitive enough to need shielded cables? Put them on with no source... if they're silent, they're probably ok...

Can you change the ohm rating of your headphone?

I think putting a small resistor in parallel with your headphones will give you a hot resistor, and less sound. Most likely not the intended effect.

    Reasonable volume levels?

It's 6dB for a doubling of volume. Each additional bit in a number doubles the range of values. So each 6dB is 1 bit. Thus the 16bit cd == 96dB range figure.

    Reasonable volume levels?

If I'm doing my math correctly, you're listening to 11 bit audio. (30/6 = 5 bits of thrown away dynamic range) When you get the amp, I think you want to feed it full volume all the time and use its volume controls to attenuate to taste in the analog world. I'm sure someone will correct...

What's the concensus on software upsampling at head-fi?

I think it's theoretically possible to improve >0 dBFS signals if you upsample to an even multiple of the original sampling rate while at the same time increasing the bit depth. I don't suspect converting 44.1 to 96 or any other fractional multiple is ever going to be a good idea, and even...

    MSB with Mac G5

Doing volume in the digital domain can also be thought of as "throwing away bits". I think the best signal is attained by having the computer pass the data unattenuated, and controlling the volume in the analog domain.

Long read- maybe someone can help

You really want to ditch the on-board sound. Everything's resampled to 48k, the 3 different nf2 boards I've used have had a left/right imbalance on their inputs (nothing at all like what you're describing though - that's pretty excessive!), and measurable rolloff below 60hz. Switching to SPDIF...

    The Long Hair Mod
